Yo, new member here

I hope this is the right subforum for introductions. Please move if it's not. I decided to head here after trying for the last week to start a profile on superturbodiesel, not sure what's going on.

I've been into Benzes for a while, I worked on them for 13 years and was Benz master certified for 9 years. I don't have a ton of experience with the mid-90's and older cars but pretty well know my way around the cars from there to about 2010-ish. I went to an independent shop around then for a few years and left the auto industry after that. And I will do everything in my power to not ever be a flat-rate tech ever again. I actually didn't start driving a Mercedes until I stopped working on them for a living. But I've got one now and won't be looking back.

I snatched up a '93 300D from Craigslist last year and started a love affair with diesels that is still going strong. Which leads me to why I am starting profiles here and, hopefully eventually, on STD. I've decided to start the long process of swapping a bananas om606 into my car. I've got some pretty ambitious plans for the build and it's going to take a while but it will happen. As soon as I get it weaseled through the finance department...

So let me paint a mental picture of what I see in my head of the finished product

-1993 300D, obviously, white exterior with black leather interior taken from donor car. Currently has palomino that's in pretty good shape for 162k miles
-500E fenders and accompanying kit, plastic panels painted to match. Euro headlights
-500E sway bars, springs, shocks, & struts
-600SL brakes, steering, front, & rear suspension(kinda undecided as of now). Big and burly **** to handle some power
-18in monoblocks. I know everyone has them but they look so good on a w124
-722.6 W5A580, from a C32, super-prepped with standalone controller. I have two of these from an insurance job back in the day. They didn't want the old ones and I wasn't about to scrap two AMG transmissions.
-The star of the show, om606 turbo.

I've got some pretty grand plans for the engine. Some may or may not be feasible for a while but I would like for them to happen eventually. Hear me out though.

3.5 crank, diy Teflon coated main and rod bearings. Some main support as well
Custom steel pistons, diy Teflon and ceramic coated
Custom steel rods
--my father is a pretty accomplished machinist and has some pretty serious metalworking machinery in his garage so those two aren't too unobtainable.
8mm mechanical injection pump, whichever one can be fine-tuned to be the most civil
Custom intake and water/air after cooler
Ported head with diy ceramic coating in ports and chambers
Bigger cams, accompanying springs, and adjustable cam gears
Compound turbo setup, inter-turbo cooled and boosted to the stratosphere

All while retaining a/c & p/s and being a daily driver.

Jesus, that looks insane now that I've written it all down. It'll be a bad ***** though when it's finished

Yo yo yo the D welcome to the board. We're a bunch of lunatics, just to warn you (it's even in my last name!).

This is the Open Discussion section, where we basically discuss everything that doesn't fit into one of the other forums. Diesel Discussion is where we discuss all things Mercedes diesel. Tech Help is for gassers, and there is also a Restoration Projects & Long-Term Builds forum (that I don't think people check out as often), and Mercedes Used Parts For Sale & Wanted and Mercedes Cars For Sale forums, as well as an Events & Gatherings forum. Chad's yearly GTG in PA is legendary.

Another site you might find interesting is superturbodiesel.com (often referred to as STD), which was founded by guys from this forum and basically focuses on hot-rodding MB diesels.

Have you thought of just buying something like a 500E or even a 560SEL/SEC as a base to build on? That way, you'd have most of the burlies there already, and probably for not much more or less money than putting everything together yourself.

Hey joosepi, I worked on cars for a long time so a bunch of car guys won't scare me. And I only have 1 feeling left to hurt but good luck, it's pretty caloused.

I set up and activated profile on STD last Friday but haven't been able to post anything. I've contacted Ralf but haven't gotten a response so I don't know what's going on. Hopefully I can get that squared away eventually, there are a lot of brains I want to pick on that site

I'm definitely set on using the car I already have. I prefer the 124 over the 126 and won't be hacking into an .036, too expensive. I can do 95% of the work myself so it will be cheaper to build my car anyway, especially by using a salvage car or two and re-selling my old parts to offset some cost a little more

Welcome aboard, you should definitely post under Diesel Discussion your ambitious build plans. As Jooseppi noted, there's double or triple the number of diesel enthusiasts looking at the posts in that section compared to Open Discussion. You'll get more feedback. Good luck with your project and share all that knowledge you gained while you you were working on Benzes.
