All right, so I'm not a big Vox fan, but good for them for getting this out there! This is a huge problem here in MA, where the average speed of traffic on some highways is 15 MPH faster than the speed limit and the 85 percentile speed is over 20 MPH over... people seem to feel that they should be able to travel in the left because hey, they're not just doing the limit, they're going ten over!

Which is why people need to be informed of it in other ways.

It is in Oklahoma. Just ask anyone who drags a trailer.

The left lane is for passing only and at least around here they really mean it.

And it is not uncommon here to see someone dragging a camper with a boat trailer attached to the camper. Hauling two trailers is legal here, and in some cases, with a permit, you can haul three.

So you can have your truck pulling a camper, pulling a boat, pulling a flatbed full of stuff.

Yeah, it's a rural state, and sportsman activities are big business here.

Road and Track magazine once called these people, 'Left lane bandits'.

Typically passing them and then coasting on front of them gets the message across.

I'm currently driving a black Ford Taurus SHO. If you're not familiar with this model, the front grille is very similar to that used by the Ford Taurus Police Interceptor.

SHO:

Police Interceptor:

Since getting this car, I've noticed a marked decline in left-lane banditry. Also, when I'm in the right hand lane, speeding Corvettes in the passing lane slow WAY down and pass me at a relative crawl.

When I am pulling a trailer I'll drive in the left lane if it is running a steady speed I am comfortable driving.

If not, I'll make my passes then get back in the right.

If I am pulling a 3 ton trailer it just makes no sense to pull in front of me and slow down. I can't stop as fast as a car (probably). Give me space, man!

People pulling stuff have a right to use the road too.

Part of the problem is that speed limits are often set improperly low. People think they are ok going the speed limit in the left lane, even if they flow of traffic would be going +10 or more without the blockage. I see this every day on my way to work.

One of the problems in our area is we have left side exit and entrance ramps. That means the RVs and Semis have to fight their way from the right lane to the left which could be up to six lanes in Virginia.

Do your state's laws have anything to say on the matter? Here in CA, they do. If towing a trailer you must stay in the designated (usually righthand) lane except to pass, and if passing, you are only to move one lane left of the designated lane. When you factor in the 10mph lower speed limit for vehicles that are towing, you won't be passing much though. You are also required to pull over, as in stop at a turnout or other space large enough, if you are holding up traffic on a two lane road. Note that the speed limit can still be considered holding up traffic, if 5 or more vehicles have gathered behind you.

Yeah, none of that applies to me. If I am holding up traffic I'll change lanes or pull over if necessary.
