Couldn't justify $86 a month when a Netflix and Amazon prime subscription provides more entertainment than I would ever need. Different TVs have different smart TV setups. My favorite is the Sharp Roku system. Plays everything, really easy to use. I like both the Chromecast and amazon stick I have as well.

The chrome cast actually streams video from a device (laptop tablet or phone) whereas the roku is sort of a smart tv box in itself. I love the chrome cast I have, it's so easy to just pop a YouTube video from your phone straight onto the projected screen. Some of the coding I've been doing I've been able to put it on the big screen while having my laptops on the couch, super convenient.

If all you're doing is streaming Netflix or Amazon video, there is little user-end difference between the roku and a chrome cast/Amazon stick.

Yep, I did this about 8 months ago. Could not get TW cable to cut me a deal on internet only for under $50 and all they gave me is 3mbps. Have a 25/25 from Verizon now for $35 locked in for 2 years. Regular antenna + Netflix and Amazon is fine by me.

I pay $50 ish from TW for internet only but they raise it every year to $70 or so. I call them up and get them to lower it back down. 3mpbs is terrible. I get 20 down. Is your location the reason for that?

You might look into HULU+, too.

About $11 a month or so and for $3 a month extra you can get it with no commercials.

That's all I would be interested in too - if it can be had for $20.00 month ( Internet. )

However, if basic cable (ESPN & CNN / FOX NEWS) can be had for $20.00 more a month, I'm in.

I have a chromecast and it's great. We mostly watch Hulu but also have Netflix and recently got Amazon prime (the latter doesn't stream natively to chromecast). You can also cast chrome tabs to the tv and I can also cast video from my PC (via Plex) to the tv as well. We got rid of premium cable a couple years ago, although still have HBO as part of a package deal for signing up again.

For a long time we had a Logitech Revue and loved it, but it just stopped working in the fall. Logitech discontinued the Revue, so I was looking for something to replace it with. I got a Chromecast for Christmas. It's all right, but not quite what I was looking for. We tried watching one movie projected from my Samsung Note 5 and the quality wasn't the best. I haven't really had a chance to use it since, so I'm still on the fence. I will have to try it from my laptop. Any suggestions would be great. The Revue came with a full keyboard and was more of a smart box. You could install apps from the google play store and use it, pretty much, like a tablet. Is the Roku or Amazon Fire TV equivalent to that?

The Roku is what you're looking for. As far as I know, they don't come with a full keyboard, however. From my what I can tell, the Fire TV is more like the Chromecast.

I started off with a decent tv package years ago, then I went to a minimal satellite package, then I dumped it all together. With a smart TV and hulu/Netflix and a micro compute stick Windows 10 PC on my TV, I have more than I could ever have time to watch.

I fired cable once in the past, and picked up satellite. When issue arose from it, we dumped it in favor of internet only...but Verizon and I disagreed on the quality of their signal in my home, and the fact that they were absolutely throttling my service. So, I fired them and went to Xfinity. Sure, I pay more, but I'm disabled and spend most of my days in front of the talking picture box, watching all sorts of things. For 150mps speed, checked regularly to make sure there's no throttling, and the Xfinity system in the house, plus phone, I'm paying in the area of $185 per month. I was going to dump it after the first of the year, but my wife decided that after two days without it, I was driving her nuts...so she made the decision that I need it. Hey...as long as she's fine with the expense and it doesn't hurt the monthly budget, I'm fine.
