Older Harley Sportsters...

Anyone know if it's a PITA or relatively easy to get new parts for older Harley Sportsters? A coworker has made me a pretty sweet deal on an 80s Sportster 1200 and an 04 Suzuki SV1000 (a deal so good that I'd be an idiot to pass on). The SV1000 runs and rides, but the Harley is a project... He has most of the parts needed to put the Harley back together, but not everything...

So I ask you - what's parts availability like for older Harleys? I know there's a pretty big aftermarket for accessories, but know nothing in the way of parts in the running gear... Anyone have any recommendations of places to order parts?

You should be able to find everything you need to get it back up and running. You can probably purchase it from dealer if you want to spend that kind of $$. Are you a young man? It will help if you are if you plan on putting a lot of miles on it.

Let's start with the riding gear first, as all that fancy-schmancy Euro gear suitable for Ducati riding just won't fly on a Hog:

There's not much in the way of Harley parts that cant be found. If you were to get totally stumped finding something, i know a guy that can probably get it if you PM

Build it up as a DualSportster, and come ride the Sierras with us! And then in six months when you get tired of it, you can make me an offer I won't be able to pass up. Everyone wins!

I don't think 1200 XLH parts would be too hard to find. The 883 model, since there were fewer made, might be more of a challenge for the 883 specific parts. No self respecting biker would ride an 883 anyway.

The 1200 came out in 1988. Some info http://www.autoevolution.com/moto/harley-davidson/sportster-1/

I'm paying $500 for both the SV1000 and Sportster, so when I do get tired, you can sure bet it will go cheap.

I often compare

Harleys and W123s. There will always be parts for both, either OE or aftermarket. Of course, the Sporty being a Girls Bike .....
