New Canadain travel advisory when going south.

Travel advisory issued in Canada just the other day. Basically do not carry money when going south into the united States.

For this to be issued the police must be quite active in seizing money from Canadians as well reciently.

The Canadian seasonal tourist dollar is very important to a few states. I wonder if the central government may tell the thieves to lay off Canadian plated cars in transit to them.

It might be wise for us to leave our debit cards at home now as well. I can think of clever ways for them to extract your account balance and get you to give them some of it.

After all if you have money in the bank it must be drug related. Although displeasing the Canadian banks could be serious.

The relevant passage:

Quote:
Money

The currency is the U.S. dollar (USD). Canadian currency, traveller’s cheques in Canadian dollars, and personal cheques drawn on Canadian banks are not widely accepted or easily negotiable in the U.S. All major credit cards are accepted throughout the U.S.

There are banking machines that will accept Canadian bank cards, but these may be limited depending on your account access. Despite these difficulties, do not carry large amounts of cash. Non-U.S. residents generally cannot negotiate monetary bank instruments (international bank drafts, money orders, etc.) without having a U.S. bank account.

There is no limit to the amount of money that you may legally take into or out of the U.S.. However, if you carry more than US$10,000 in monetary instruments (such as U.S. or foreign coin, currency, traveller’s cheques, money orders, stocks or bonds) into or out of the U.S., or if you receive more than that amount while in the U.S., you must file a report (Customs Form 4790) with U.S. Customs. Failure to comply can result in civil and criminal penalties, including seizure of the currency or monetary instruments.
Carrying over ten grand in cash could be problematic. Not sure why you'd want to do that.

Over $10 grand has to be declared. The problem is that some American cops/border scum take the carrying of any amount of cash over $100 or so as "possible drug money" and use it as license to steal it. Especially if their victim is of the wrong color, creed, or ethnicity.

It's a shame that the US is too filled with fearful idiots to go back to the virtually open pre-9/11 border with Canada.

Some people may feel the cheaper exchange rate is available in Canada and perhaps take more American cash than they should. I used to find visa gave me a good rate and used it primarily.

Now it is bothering me where I saw the warning. I did see it though. Anyone carrying ten grand or more does not seem that bright though. A few hundred certainly is normal. Or even one or two thousand.

It's not illegal to bring it, only not to declare it. The problem is that American uniformed rubbish interpret the law loosely.
