Older fiats (124) and Alfa spiders. Clean early 90s jap turbo cars will hit their stride soon - the 300zx, mitsu 3000gt, starion, rx7 (FD is already through the roof). Frank, what's the details on the 944?

Here's what it is:

CoolCat Porsche

Best driving car ever. Handles like a top, gives instant throttle response and 25mpg. Unfortunately, I used it as a daily for awhile, and the old paint didn't really hold up. So it's a bit shopworn, but still only 52K miles. New brakes, battery, motor mounts, timing belt and WP @50K miles. Needs a minor A/C repair, which I may do if it doesn't go soon. I have it up for sale at Automotive Restorations:

Contact Us | Automotive Restorations, Inc.

If you can live with a bit of cloudy clearcoat, it's going to be a steal somewhere around $5K. Just be aware that these cars will surprise you with high cost of ownership, and the market hasn't noticed them.

Too many hard miles and the exterior is pretty rough.

Are you asking about modern vehicles that are likely to become valuable classics, or cars that are already classics that might go up in value? It seems like most of the suggestions here are for cars that are already classics, or at least significantly older.

BMW E30 convertibles are already starting to command decent money.

Back in the 60's I told a friend that VW Bugs would be the hot setup 50 years hence. VW van's even more so.

This seemed nuts at the time, but cheap cars are tossed when they are worn out and no matter how many of them were sold new if only a few survive.....

I would think PT Crusiers, the convertible ones, will be collector items 40 year out because they will be so weird and rare. Their weird because they are, and they will be rare because so many of them will fall apart and not be worth fixing.

Something you can pick up cheap is a Pontiac G6 with the convertible hardtop. Only a handful were built and only during a period of a few months.

The trouble with keeping a car is that it is not like a bar of gold. It needs a big space to shelter it, it needs to be maintained, and it needs to be insured and tagged. All of these are sunk costs not involved with gold.

But you can have a lot more fun with a convertible then you can with a bar of gold!

And on the flip side what cars are getting worth less?

I would guess cars from the 30's, like Packards.

There is a long arc to these things.

Mostly pre-war. Rolls-Royces have also taken a massive hit.

things like Deusenbergs have been a bit flat, not rising, but Bugattis have been pretty strong. Some as noted above have diminished in value.

The X-cars is a great example. These cars would drive. They would even return decent mpg.

But when they needed repair you could easily toss them and buy something else. Nothing on them was cheap to repair. Their electrical system would fail and then you were looking at $450 for a distributor. This is for a car that you could pick up in running condition for $800.

And Buick painted a number of them with a lacquer like paint that started to craze after a few years. Have you priced what a lacquer type paint job costs these days?

I don't even see these in the salvage yards anymore.

That 124 cabriolet hope has been kicking around a long time here.

After 15 years, I'll still take the124 HT coupe over the cabriolet.
