Loiasis - Human Eye Worm

Loiasis

This is another lovely read for people who think that they have problems.

Quote:
Introduction

The adult Loa loa filarial worm migrates throughout the subcutaneous tissues of humans, occasionally crossing into subconjunctival tissues where it can be easily observed. This presentation led to the popular name, the African eye worm. Loa loa does not normally affect one’s vision but can be painful when moving about the eyeball or across the bridge of the nose. [16][7] The disease is, as of 2009, endemic to 11 western and central African countries, particularly in forested and swampy areas, and affects an estimated 12-13 million people, all in Africa. Geographically, the disease is limited by the location of the two tabanid vectors, Chrysops silicea and C. dimidiata, which prefer rainforest-like environments of west and central Africa. Endemicity is particularly high in Cameroon, Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Equitorial Guinea, Nigeria, and Gabon.

Aiyeee! WTF is wrong with you Twitchkitty? Geez, normal aches and pains aren't good enough for you?

Put your keyboard down and back away from the computer. You're suffering from some severe Google overload and or boredom.

I just posted about how americans are 5% of the world's population and take 80% of the world's opiate based pain killers. WtF, loa loa, take a pill.

I am reading about avermectin for my cows. Maybe I need some too.

I knew a missionary who contracted this worm in Africa. One night it started crawling across his eye and he went to the hospital to try to catch and remove it. Can't recall if they got it or not.

You thinking of IVOMEC pour-on? Ivermectin, not Avermectin. I never heard of using Avermectin on ruminants. I use Ivermectin injectable for hogs orally on my goats @ 1ml per 100 lbs., but only after fecal tests. Also the horses, only I use equine paste. Never had to worm the cattle. One of my kids got pinworms once. The whole family had to take single dose Ivermectin capsules. It's a very common med across species.

History of avermectin and ivermectin, with notes on the history of other macrocyclic lactone antiparasitic agents. - PubMed - NCBI

I use the name avermectin to refer to the family of drugs in general terms. I don't know if this use is widely accepted. Different manufacturers use different names for their products as the patents have expired.

It was fun reading. The drug interrupts neurotransmitters and receptors at a junction that does not exist in vertebrates so it is practically non toxic to them - us.

As with most drugs overuse is leading to resistance.

A woman once asked the wife on the phone. What do I get for worms? The lady had also explained what she was experiencing and I overheard. The wife asked me and I told her about a dollar a Dozen.

The wife smiled and said that I did not know either but to seek out a drugstore. It is a common product there. We both knew the lady had heard my response.
