Leaving the Middle East - USA is next!

[No, this is not meant to be a political thread!]

I do not know what's up with the UAE, but every job I've gotten so far over here results on all of the company's staff being treated like dirt. Ego issues, micromanaging, lack of marketing budgets, lack of equipment for our workshop, lack of financial accounting, lack of credit for ideas or research, arbitrary blaming, last-minute policy changes, meal plan removed, mice and roaches in my room... the list goes beyond the miserly salary and the museum not having a license (surprise!). So, after holding on for 6 months as the curator of a museum here, I am out.

Out to the PETERSEN AUTOMOTIVE MUSEUM!

Will be discussing visa details with the guys in charge there this week; but there is no way I won't be part of it this year. Hope to see some of the familiar faces of this forum soon!

That's awesome news!!! Sorry to hear that your experience at Al Ain had not been better, but I hope it's at least helped you be better-positioned for the Petersen job.

Are you bringing Lawrence with you, or is he staying behind?

The attitude there may be cultural. I'd bet working at the Peterson will be an excellent experience. I am envious.

I am trying really hard not to put a blanket statement on this country. I have met a handful of acculturate, respectful Emiratis with impeccably educated and well-mannered children.

However, the bulk of what I have seen, what I have heard and what I have read keep pointing towards the well-known stereotype of locals having first-world riches and third-world minds... People obsessed with status, fast and noisy cars, brand names and with complete disregard for money or their own futures. People so oblivious towards the values of their own religion and their fellow humans... people who cheat their way through school and end up (mis)managing entire armies of underpaid, underqualified, mistreated, malnourished labor from abroad.

Still. Could be worse. Could be Saudi Arabia, which makes the UAE look like the court nobles in Versailles.

Are you sure you are in the U.A.E. and not L.A.?

Oh, no! Beverly Hills and North Hollywood have become their own nation!

I will leave the poor 230TE behind. I wish I could save the 450SEL 6.9 #900 from the fangs of neglect, but it's a lost fight...

lol, it's bad enough stumbling around groggily and walking into a cat -- imagine walking into a porcupine ! Ouch!

The thing is... I kind of do. I have met some of the big guns in the UAE automotive world and will be collaborating with them in the following months. When asked, I cannot give a good reference of this place; it has lost any and all credibility, and will sink once the owner stops siphoning money into it from his own salary.

The building is falling apart, the cars are neglected, and the staff is unqualified labor for the most part. Would not want this Museum even if it was free!
