Progressive Inurance

I was shopping around for car insurance and figured I'd see what Flo had to offer. Plugged in my name, address and birthday hit enter and all of a sudden both of my cars show up on their site. Is insurance info public info? I do not ever recall going to their web site before.

Anyone else want to try and report back?

Edit. Just continued on the site and they know my wifes name and age. I had to have been on the site before and just don't remember. How the heck would they have all this info? And they know the insurance company I have now.......Holy crap .. they are freaking watching me.

Businesses collect all sorts of information for all sorts of reasons. There is a data base the insurance industry uses to track claims and such, and they have access to motor vehicle records. So your experience isn't surprising. By volunteering your identifying info, you've given them permission to pull your records.

If you really want to get nervous, sign up for a Fedex online id. I guess they want to make sure that you aren't some felon redirecting someone's packages to a warehouse. They seem to know things that only a credit bureau would know, although they don't pull your credit report. Things like former addresses, mortgage payment, employers, etc.

This is different from the web beacon and script tracking that's all over the internet. It's not necessarily a technology issue at all. These companies have legitimate access to some sort of industrial data source and they are using it either without your permission, or without you realizing you've given permission.

If you did not get a lower quote from progressive, expect an increase soon for your current carrier. I would suspect they all communicate. Now they know you went shopping probably for price and did not buy so they figure they have room for an increase. They are all in the business to extract as much from you as they can, and deny as much as they have to payout as they can.

I shop for insurance about every 3 years. My experience is that it really helps to keep the premiums down. Insurance companies will abuse the loyalty of the customers to increase rates over time above what competitive rates from other companies.

I could tell stories about some of my customers and myself who have used the same provider for up to 20+ years and swear up and down they get the best rates from them. I suggested that they shop and there has rarely been a case where they didn’t find a notably lower rate for the same coverage from a different company. By notably I mean between 10% and 40%. Same thing happened to me when I used a company for 12 years and never questioned the rate increases. I finally decided to look and saved 35% for the exact same policies but from different companies.

last time I visited trip A last time some beetch was playing games stalling when I went into get a quote--in a cubicle with her conspirator,
I told them I had never had to sit around waiting for this special "treatment' before and finally told her-them I was not putting up with their game any longer and got up and left.
a few days later I get a letter from the state indicating their system said I was un-covered.

I got the # of trip a's district manager and told him I knew exactly that the grusom broad at the mid cities branch was playing games--and I walked out `so she retaliated by notifying the state,
I also told him if he thought letting some ogger bittch behave like that was doing his outfit any favors-HE was an idiot.
What ever they compensate dolts like that, Trip A is getting ONE Sorry Deal , you cant get thru to imbeciles though, they jack with customer loyalty, and creep the rate up, its all about workin them , just like apartment rentals.

Some years back while doing the bi-annual rate shopping I tried Progressive. They couldn't get the european VIN to come up on the 240D and so wouldn't insure it. I passed on getting quotes for the other vehicles. Who's paying for all those expensive ads we're bombarded with 24/7? One guess......

Were you shopping online? A quick call to an actual underwriter can solve that problem in minutes. I've insured tons of non 17 digit VIN and Grey Market cars, but the automated systems will never take them.

I would never consider Progressive or Geico. Both WAY over advertise and that has to be paid for by their customers. I have Auto Owners for car and home. I have had only one claim and I cannot complain about them. They do advertise once in awhile on TV and most of the TV marketing is during March Madness. A number of years ago I had Esurance when they were only marketing on the internet. Once they started advertising on TV my rates went up considerably. Also, how much of the advertising that Progressive or Geico broadcasts communicates anything new or productive? Most of it is produced as entertainment. I don't pay an insurance company to entertain me. Progressive, Geico, and the like are jokes to me.

Most big carriers do that. It's from CLUE and/or other LexisNexis data. They have a lot more than they are even showing you. It's kinda creepy, I know.
