560SEC

Would you even consider looking at this 560SEC and is 220K on the body to much miles?

Mercedes Benz 560SEC Coupe (Super Clean)

The miles wouldn't concern me. Price seems quite reasonable. The fuel economy might be an issue. BTW, I know of a black one for sale in Carson City in much less good condition.

I would not worry too much about the body unless there is rust in the floors. Check the doors. If they still shut with a solid feel then the body should be OK.

On the S class coupes the first thing to give out, body wise, are the door hinges. This is true all the way back to the W111 coupes.

Mileage wise I know what I'm getting into and I'm aware it's not going to be good. Even that I live in LA, I don't rack up that much miles in my personal cars.

Time to look up Jim's page with his 560SEC knowledge.

I had a 500 sec. The engine is bulletproof. I stopped driving it regularly when it had about 140k on it mainly because of the long door and my 90 degree pull in parking lot.

I was trying to sell it. I autocrossed it for one season before selling it.

It was as cheap or cheaper than a diesel to maintain but did use a lot of fuel. For the 500 it was RUG. Mostly got mid teens and on a trip if not too speedy cold nearly get 20 mpg, but it was an awesome road car. I always felt very affluent driving it.;)

I remember a line from Road & Track's review of the 560SEL. The test was done with the tester riding in the back seat with a lacky doing the driving.

After the trip the author was asked how he liked the ride and he answered, "I spent freely."

But then all of those 126 bodies do ride nice.

What did he mean by that?

I found my sec to be sporty, with a firm ride and excellent dynamics (I autocrossed it for chriz sake!). The rear seats are none too large. The fronts are excellent and plenty generous in size....the leather was sweet!

I'm reading all these horror stories about expensive repairs, but parts are not much more then what I'm paying for my Volvo 780.

Judging from the photos, that is as clean as a 200k+ body gets. The price is reasonable, especially with a rebuilt engine AND tranny.

The interior looks pretty nice, it is missing some trim parts tho. I do like the color combo, I must get old liking a white car.

I've owned several of these and I currently own a 1991 560SEL in very close to mint condition, (It's white and for sale, btw ;)) and they are VERY good cars. I would go through the car and check out what records he has. If the rear hydro suspension is good and the timing chain and guides have been replaced and it runs and drives very well then it would probably be a good buy.

I do offer a mobile PPI (Pre-Purchase Inspection) in the LA area for a reasonable price for forum members. I can tell you exactly what the car will need now, soon, and in the future and if it's a good car or not. PM me for details.

Mine was very simple. No adjusting suspension, RUG, not many options. The most annoying thing was the right side seat switch which acted up.

I will if I decide to buy it. Thanks.
