That's because of Brexit isn't it? If Britain votes to exit the EU, your new passport won't entitle you to work in Switzerland will it? It's the reason I'm in favor of the UK staying in the EU. I want to retain my access to Europe.

By the way, adjuncting sucks big time. I did it for 6 years before securing a full-time job. Academic share-cropping according to one of my friends.

Y'know, I don't know if it is Brexit. Wouldn't Brits just have the same rights as other EEA citizens like the Swiss and Norwegians?

I also believe we should stay in the EU for the same reasons and the economic mayhem (we're heading into Politics and Religion territory now!). It's one of those cutting your nose off to spite your face things. We should start a thread elsewhere. ...Referendum is coming.

I can't agree with you enough about adjuncting. Gawker has been doing a series on it and I was reading about people who were adjuncting for 8, 9, 10 years and my hair just stood on end. One year was enough. Without this job, I just would have left academia this summer.

But anyway you're not supposed to renew your passport anyway until your 3-6 months out. It's very persnickety of them if it does cause a problem.

Switzerland isn't in the EU. So I don't see how Brexit will have any influence on the 'saurus employment.

The "rights" of UK nationals if they did decide to leave would be bashed out for a few decades I guess - well more than enough time for the French to have a real good go at us!

New UK passport can be arranged within a day - easy - but you might have to stand in a line of very un-UK looking people for a few hours...

I'll buy one from you for $1 and sell it back for $1 when you return if you want to do it that way. My recommendation is to sell then and pick something up over there that is unique and start the love affair with cars all over again. A Citroen comes to mind.

I assume you're talking about this...

I should start a new thread about what European car people think I should replace my cars with.

I am slowly adjusting to the idea of selling the cars. I just have lots of great memories driving them around and some money in repairs, of course. Plus the dreams of how they would look once I cobbled my money together. I guess it's how a lot of us are. It just sucks to get a job (yaaaay!) and five days later being realizing you have to sell things that you love. There wasn't much of an adjustment period because of the 4 week window to move.

As for Brexit, yeah, I thought Brits would just end up with the same rights as other European Economic Area people like the Swiss and Norwegians. The fact Cameron is anti-Brexit is pretty telling; I never expected it to be him holding the line.

And I looked into the passport renewal, you can only do the one day super express thing if you're in the country. So no luck. Everything's turning up Benzasaurus.

The whole Brexit thing really doesn't matter for your employment in Switzerland. The stupid move from Cameron was to even mention a referendum or the possibility of one. The assumption that there is some sort of basic fall back trade agreement is false.

Well if you can't swing by London (or is it Swansea?) for the one day express service I thought there was a one week service via an embassy. Where's the nearest one for where you are now?

It's in NYC, so between 1-1.5 hrs away by train depending on what train you catch. I haven't heard back from the employers, so I'm starting to wonder if this really is a big deal.

There is no 1 week processing if you're outside the UK, either. It's 6 weeks. Apparently they used to have 7 global passport processing centers, and now everything goes through Liverpool. So I would post my passport, it would take them 4 weeks minimum after arrival, then they have to ship it back and it has to arrive via American post (which is very slow).

Yep, everything is def turning up Benzasaurus. I hope this won't mean another month without pay.

I've got an international mover coming today to do the estimate. No calls back from the others yet. It's hard to find one with good reviews. I asked a friend who's moved from USA NE to Exeter, then Exeter to Beijing, then Beijing to San Fran, and now San Fran to USA NE who she used for USA to Exeter. Looked them up. Abysmal, abysmal reviews. FFS.

Something will end up broken. The question is: what?

When we moved when I was 16 to the UK they stole my father's stereo. Apparently he only put one stereo on the inventory list, so they took his and left my crap one when they did all the packing (which they have to do, for the insurance).

I just did some googling on ex-pat Brits in Europe and Brexit. It's not clear what will happen, particularly in Switzerland. It's not even clear if the UK will remain in the EEA if they exit the EU so it wouldn't surprise me if that is the issue troubling your potential employer, particularly since the Swiss recently enacted some stricter immigration policies.

That is a Giuguario Designed show car. Never produced. I remember it being on the cover of road and track and thinking....what was he thinking? ....and why was R & T glorifying the ugly thing with a cover? he has done some very excellent designs.

ah, the EU, lovely place to visit, horrible place for old cars.....

truly, the standards for aircraft in this country are similar to what vehicle standards are in the EU.

I have to wonder if there is still somewhat of an employee bias against women in many countries. There really still is I believe but Canada seems to have perhaps reduced it to some extent hopefully.

I have always encouraged equailty of the genders. Having a wife and four daughters and being estrogen swamped I guess there was little choice.

All our four daughters do pretty well. Yet there was a time one was blocked by an owner from their upper management.

The owners hidebound policy was just no females in upper management. Even though the owner was an absentee owner. He must have known our daughter was essentially running the company for all practical purposes. Plus designing and implementing major changes that were really beneficial. If not earth shattering at the time.

It really pissed me off at that time. Some of us guys are just not too bright.

That's not fighting for equality - that's fighting for survival

Whoa whoa whoa.

We're way off track here. Let's get back to the topic at hand.

Ahem.

The Citroen Karin. Y/N?

As for me, the person who sent me that ominous email about my passport and contract doesn't work on Fridays. So I'll be on tenterhooks all weekend. Great. Once I know about that I can get started thinking about selling the cars.

A car in Europe? Assuming you will want to travel some. Perhaps a small window van or station wagon? Many a night when travelling around we have taken a tent or slept in the vehicle of the time.

I did not really want to but have gotten a van reciently. The wife all too frequently wants something brought home or to the cottage that is just too large for todays cars.

Sorry about bringing up the employment for women thing. No intent to sidetrack the thread.
