Smile Best Mercedes-Benz Engine?

I was curious as to know what mercedes engine is best? I have heard M103 are very good engines, as well as M104(but not as good as m103?).

When I say "best".. i mean in performance and quality.

It would be interesting to see what kind of responce I recieve.

119 engine all the way: One tough bastard.
I'd like to make a street rod with one some day, so if you have a good one just laying around..........

M119-with twin turbos could generate over1,200 HP for the Sauber LeMans cars-so at 322 BHP in a road car it's not even straining

how much do regular m119 engines cost new or used? Sounds like an awesome engine that produces 300+ HP!

The 1992 119 5 Liter engine had a warranty replacement value to MB of approx $35,000 excluding any labor charges. From my understanding they never had to replace one. Later, open deck engines were less expensive.

I'm not real savvy on the different "M" designations of each engine type, but I am happy with the M104 on my W124...have yet to pull the internals on that one.

Is the M119 the V8 found on the 500E and R129? If so, I have yet to do more than fluid services on ours...of course, the R129 has really low mileage right now.

As far as 6 cylinders go, I would have to put my vote in for the M104. Except for head-gasket problems, I think it is the best 6 cylinder to come from Mercedes.

At a MB club TechFest in 1992 or so we had the team manager for the Sauber Group C cars present. During his discussion he stated that the twin turbo MB engine (119) was manufactured largely of stock components modified for race use (i.e. crank, rods, pistons, block, etc.). He even said that the heads / cams were basically stock. These versions generated in excess of 1200HP for qualifying and were approx 850HP in race trim. These were the engines that powered the fastest LeMans cars of all time. The really neat fact was that they used the same engines for the entire season - they never had to be rebuilt or freshened. They easily outpaced all of their peer competition. If performance is the yardstick, my vote is for the 119.

If you want durability and economy I vote for the 3.0 L turbo diesel.

The 4.3 liter AMG V-8 from the C43 is hard to beat -- light, powerful and great engine note.

The AMG 5.5L is also notable, but more common with the CLK55, the E55, the S55, the CL55 andc the ML55 all using it.

I did vote for the OM617.. However that's because I have one.. :p

The 230E's 2.3L I-4 8V is not a great engine IMO. It's quite economical, however it makes the same amount of power as my 617. It even sounds just as bad.. Not to mention that it drinks more... what else... the 300CD actually feels faster if it's in the right gear. Mind you, my 230E has a 5-speed.. don't like that engine.

Never had an M119 powered car. They're still out of reach... :p
