Petition for Viking ship

Petition to allow the Draken Harald Harfagre to continue its journey into the Great Lakes and visit its scheduled ports. I had planned to see it in Chicago on July 27th. I hope the petition works and it can make it. I've sailed on other tall ships in the Great Lakes without a pilot.

Going to bed soon but I'll sign it later. That's insane - $400K for a pilot to shepherd that around??

Looks like great fun. I'd love to experience such a craft. Looking forward to the second half of the Vikings annual installment coming up soon on HC. Date uncertain - "Fall" is all that's known.

harbor pilots - my understanding consists of a few things:

-in many places, to be a harbor pilot, you must have an unlimited Master's license - that's a guaranteed $150k/yr job anywhere in the world

-Usually there is a requirement that you be intimately familiar with the area you are piloting (so you can't just move to another port and be a pilot there

-lots of father-son passdown here

-slightly dangerous job - the pilot must meet the boat outside the harbor and board it, If seas are rough, it can get hairy. Yes, this is a risk that many seafarers face...

-I don't know if there is legal liability, but I can imagine you don't want to be the pilot that slams the cargo ship into the dock

-Most pilot fees are paid by shipping companies, who roll this cost into the price of running a cargo vessel. If your boat has 4700 cars on it (see: Cougar Ace) then that's a small(?) surcharge on the price of each car.

I can't defend the amount, or the requirement, but I know that harbor piloting is not a bad gig if you can get it. I welcome arguments to the contrary.

-Was a sailor a long time ago
