Bluetooth question for "sound bar"
The lovely Ms engatwork recently picked up a couple of bluetooth "sound bars". One for the shop and one for the house. Needless to say I like it alot but I'm wondering about my Verizon "data usage" going on youtube and playing an album. Being cheap like I am I'm curious if I should make an attempt to down load music versus playing it through youtube. Any recommendations regarding down loading music into my phone? I'm new to this stuff.

The best answer is to get wifi out at your shop - they make range extenders that you just plug into the wall. You might be able to surf quicker out there also...
Most Verizon phone (I have an Android through Verizon) will tell you how much data you've used vs. how much you have left - but streaming youtube for hours at a time is not gonna be pretty for most people....depending on your plan. as for getting music on your phone- if you have an iphone, the easiest/most legal way is to buy everything through iTunes, or if you have a bunch of CD's - find a computer (with a cd drive...) with iTunes and import them. then share them to your phone for android, I just ripped all of my cd's to .mp3 (using "CDex") and move the .mp3 files to a folder called "music" on your phone. Most phones have a media player that plays .mp3's easily. perhaps others could recommend an mp3 player 'app' that is easy to use, makes playlists etc... let us know your phone (make and model?) and we might be able to help more... -John

If you are getting music over the cel towers it counts against your data allocation. If you can connect via wifi to your home internet connection it doesn't count against your cel phone data. Use wifi whenever you can.
A five minute song might be about 5Megs, maybe less. |

You either have an iphone or an Android phone... You are correct that your Galaxy is an Android phone.
I talked above about what I do - rip my CD"s to .mp3 files (you'll need to mess with the options if you use CDex) and then move the files to your phone.) Let me know if any of the above actions (ripping from a cd, file formats, usb cables...) are foreign to you But this all supposes that you have files for everything you want - this is not a short process if you have a lot of music on CD or iTunes... I know that there are streaming services other than youtube ("Soundcloud", "Pandora", "Spotify" are the biggest names that come to mind - they will all cost data if you are not on Wi-Fi - less data than youtube though (some carriers might sell deals where they don't count data as part of a given service...but you'd need to look at that). Those services are mostly free with ads, but you can pay to remove ads....I'm sure that exceptions abound. Let us know if Wi-Fi to the shop will be an issue - there are lots of creative ways to solve this. -John

Looks like it'll work.
I'd be *slightly* concerned that if you put the shop-side unit facing the house, if your phone is 'behind' the shop-side unit, how far away can it get ? Honestly, no idea, but it'll probably be fine. https://www.engeniustech.com/resources/ENH500%20User%20Manual%20v.1.0.pdf looks like you put both of them in "access-point" mode and maybe put the shop-side on far side of the shop, so that your phone and stuff are between both units. I'm a fan of the "cable and OTS wifi router" approach - if the distance isn't too far (must be less than 100m/300ft) ...only because once you have a cable, you can put anything you want at the far end (and replace stuff more easily if something breaks) They sell 300ft cables but the easier answer is to make friends with your IT person/electrician at work, who probably has a spool of the stuff lying around or a long piece that he/she is trying to get rid of.... Run the cable out to your shop as best you can. This is the cheapest way, there are better ways (conduit, patch panels at the house and in the shop, fiber runs with converters on each side (and spare fibers...), but I'm not sure how much time/effort you want to put into installation. bottom line - what you linked to should work, but I've never tried this before - maybe someone else on here can point you better. -John

Thanks John. That is a good idea to run it by the IT guys at work. I will discuss with them on Monday.

IMHO, the only wifi solution I'd recommend is stuff from UniFi. It can be somewhat cumbersome to set up for home use, but the price and product quality is hard to beat!
What type of wifi router do you have at home? How far is it from your garage? You might be able to simply move your existing router closer to the garage. -J

We have sattelite radio in the winery tasting room and I can't stand it. When I'm there I plug my iPhone into the system and play iTunes radio over wifi for hours on end, changing artists periodically. Sometimes I use Pandora. I have unlimited data but have checked on the phone several times and the streaming at least once a week, usually 2 or three times for 4+ hours at a stretch barely makes a blip on my usage.

I used to like Pandora, but found Spotify to be a superior streaming program, with the ability to actually find the song you're looking for, instead of songs similar to what you want. I've gone as far as cancelling my subscription to Pandora, which I've had for years, and begin paying the higher rate.
As has been suggested above, use wifi for streaming music and videos...your wallet will thank you. If you already have internet in the shop, an addition of a wireless router is painless, for the most part, and easy to do. I have a Pioneer VSX-XXXX-K receiver in my home, with ethernet connectivity, which is plugged into the home network. It comes with an app to control the system with the smartphone, which I found useless until I began streaming music. With the Pioneer app, I can tie it in with Spotify, and control everything from the phone. I have speakers tied into the receiver upstairs, which I installed in the basement so I can listen to it while down there working on projects. It's been the easiest and most seamless system I've had to date for internet radio and streaming uses.

"Winery tasting room"? I believe you are being a bit pretentious there El. Around here we call that a "shed".
