Solar roofing

Anybody familiar with this?
https://electrek.co/2016/11/17/tesla-solar-roof-cost-less-than-regular-roof-even-before-energy-production-elon-musk/

Going to be needing a new roof next year. Seems as though it could be a win-win proposition. I had been thinking about Elon's "Power-wall" but it wasn't economically sensible. Now, it just might be for here in the Southwest.

I've been pondering such a move. My roof area is enormous and the asphalt three tabs are now about 25 years old....no leaks yet.

I wonder what the cost of insurance will be with a solar array forming your roof?

Has anybody delved into the cost per square installed? Also what hardware is needed to hook into the main panel?

If I had enough sun here in Western PA to make it economically affordable, it would be an upgrade I would be highly interested in. I looked at the technology a few years ago, and found that it would take me more than 25 years to see the savings. I think at the time, savings could be seen in the Western states in roughly 7 years...if I remember correctly.

It might do better now. I hear all this sort of thing is dropping in cost every day.

Nice.

Years ago someone told me of a painted-on solar roof. I never found any references to it. He told me of an example and gave me directions to get to it by air. I haven't flown in the area since and it may no longer exist if it ever did.
