Emailing a check

I have a business tenant who wants to use a Delux system to email me the rent check which I can print out and deposit. I may have some details wrong...that is what it sounded like to me.

Anybody using this system?

Just wondering if it will work for me.

Talk to your friendly customer service folks at your bank if you have any qualms. If the check has a valid ABA routing number and account number, and an acceptable facsimile of a signature, I don't see a problem.

Wouldn't it be easier to have him transfer or deposit the rent into your account? If you're worried about giving your account number out, you already give it out when you write a check.

Absolutely not. I worked in a bank for a few years, and I can tell you a thing or two about how it works. Aside from the high cost of a traditional bank wire, giving out your account number and routing code are a good way to become the victim of fraud. I avoid using conventional paper checks for the same reason. Instead, I use the online bill pay feature of my bank account...the bank sends a physical check, pays the postage, and the check has a one shot account number. Both cheaper and safer, a total win.

As for printing a check, it used to be that check readers required magnetic ink. But maybe they're all optical today. In any event, it would work if you do an online deposit with your phone.

The last time I rented a property, the landlord had an account at the same bank I had mine at. Using the account number only, I was able to deposit the rent into her account each month without issue. I was able to pay my rent when I cashed my pay check.

The essential point is that you are honest. The landlord is taking a risk by making that info available to you. The routing code for your bank is public information. So the account number is all a fraudster would have needed to create a counterfeit check.

I did find a video on the Deluxe system, it's pretty cool, go down to the middle of the page:

I mailed a monthly check in early November to a web-site company with which I have an account that runs between $110 and $120 monthly, depending on usage. I sent it to the wrong address, and the postal service returned the mail as undeliverable. I called the company to explain why they had not received my payment. They asked for my check number, account number, amount of the check, and the routing number. They just used that information to get them money from my checking account.

Still requires MICR toner to be read and prevent fraud. Can confirm

What if Tom prints and then uses a bank app on his phone to deposit?

I did some investigating. The latest rule, Check 21, stll requires origial checks to be printed in mag ink. But somewhat ambiguously, it also allows a "substitute image" to be processed as if it was the actual check. Phone aps read checks using OCR, not MICR. So I think it would be possible to print a check on a regular printer and use your phone to deposit it. Whether or not it's ok from a legal point of view, I don't know.

It appeared after I printed it I could just cut it off the full page and deposit it like any paper check, so that is what we did. Hope it cashes.

I went online with one of my banks to make a payment today ....car lease... and I was informed they were changing to a physical check & mail to vendor system. Before that, they used to wire/transfer. Thing I didn't like about that was the two day float. Pay on day 1, delivered to payee on day 3. Bank says this new system has the same time frame. Not sure how they can make that claim.
I just wonder why they switched. Any ideas? Has to be more expensive for the bank? Local bank.
