You should endure the test, knowing that it is probably more uncomfortable for your doctor than you. Prostate cancer is pretty bad, giving a man pain where it is the hardest to endure. One of the guys I worked with had prostate cancer; it took more than a year to get rid of it. He had pain from the cancer, the radiation treatment, and the chemo. He missed a lot of time from work.

Colonoscopies are important too. My brother, who will be 80 next month, had a big section of his colon removed due to cancer. He has had to wear a bag for the last 5 or 6 years. They couldn't get all of the cancer; it has spread to his liver and lungs. He had to stop driving a few weeks ago, because he hit a light pole driving his truck and didn't know quite how it happened. That took away one of his last pleasures. He doesn't think he will live to be 81.

The rising or slightly rising PSA numbers which many of us have have lead to invasive biopsies and then sometimes to various treatments ranging up to removing the prostate, all of which can have serious secondary affects on quality of life which are worse than potentially slow growing cancer. The thinking nowadays is that _if_ there is slow growing cancer it can be left alone and monitored. Works for me....

And for those putting off a colonoscopy, man up. It is basically a non-issue. Drink a bunch of ginger ale with stuff mixed in, in the afternoon/evening before, crap your brains out for a few hours the evening before, get put to sleep next morning and wake up refreshed, zero memory of the actual scoping, zero hangover.

My cardiologist of 25 yrs. tests for PSA every time he draws blood. 1x or 2x per year, whatever Medicare allows. I've always been a little below the test "normal range" (2 or 3?). Soooo, I haven't worried about it......yet.

A friend of mine complained about his prostate exam. There is the simple one done at the doctors office where they just feel for the size and any lumps. He was reffered to a surgeon and I assume they are going to be a little more aggressive in feeling for lumps etc.

Anyways never leaving an opportunity on the table. I simply asked my friend if the surgeon was by any chance gay?

Im more amused by the mentality of not willing to collect a stool sample because its gross, BUT if a terminal condition arises the stool sample would have provided advanced notice of, perfectly willing to put a gun to ones head and pull the trigger.

Wouldnt it be a little easier to poke around in some poop for 2 minutes?

And, the VA would not let you leave till they believe the anesthetic has dissipated and you have to have someone drive you home or for any procedure where anesthesia is used or they won't do the procedure.

So there is waiting before the proceedure, the time it takes for the proceedure and waiting after it.

About the only test that I'd refuse would be an inquest. I told the wife it'd be done "over my dead body"! She offered to set up the appointment.

If someone has issues with a certain test, they can always request a good dosing of anti-anxiety meds. Just tell the doc that you are extremely anxious about the procedure and ask for something along the line of Valium, Xanax or similar. Take 2 of them and you’ll be fine but will absolutely need someone to drive for you. Take 3 and you won’t be able to walk. Recovery from the drug takes about 3-4 hours.

Re prostate exams, they are not difficult but an uncomfortable experience for many for the first time. The psychology is far worse than the experience. The whole thing is over in about 30 seconds and there is no pain involved. Just ask the doc to describe what is going to happen and how long it takes. Remember to breathe and don't hold your breath, which many do when they are afraid.

Colonoscopies are very important to find polyps, ulcers, hemorrhoids, and/or damaged tissues. If they find nothing you are good for another 10 years without repeating the test; if they find something you go from there.

The overwhelming majority of colon polyps are not cancer, but all colon cancer starts as polyps.

For a fecal test, get some exam gloves and a N95 respirator.

A couple of friends had surgery in the recent past for problems with their cervical spine. Both regained their lives by having surgery.

Use your brain to help find solutions and not just to indulge your fears.
