New law in Ontario, Canada.
Police cannot just stop you and demand identification for no reason under the new law. In fact they have to inform you that you can just walk and this hopefully includes drive away.
The police have to be at wits end as they wanted the right to continue to question or harass any person they desired and demand identification for no reason. Gave them immense power over citizens. Also pretty much ends all the illegal fishing trips they were engaged in. Personally I was hoping this might come to pass as the growth of what they were doing was getting more entrenched all the time. The police seemed to enjoy having this much power and I think they were becoming very overbearing and too authoritarian with it. Ontario was the sore spot in Canada for some of the now Illegal practices. I think their government there was becoming all too aware of how people where being abused and starting to distrust the police. I imagine certain questions presented would have been entrapment oriented as well. I got stopped once in my life for no reason at all and the feeling remains of being lied to. The officer said I was weaving when I knew I was not. I assume since I was on my way home from the cottage late at night he was checking for a drinking driver. I have no issue with a dui set up for all traffic but really disliked that approach. Also I did not have to provide identification as the officer wanted to leave my presence as quickly as possible. I am a reasonable person but what he did was not justified in any way. I have become a believer where some illegal practices are allowed or practiced anyway a front facing camera should be in the car. It can be very helpful in the case of accidents sometimes as well. The audio portion of anyone talking to you at the car window can also be helpful. It might just stop the application of false charges for many that I suspect are becoming all too common. |

I am surprised it was legal in Canada.
Though I am always startled at the lack of restraint they practice in the detective shows in the UK about arresting people on flimsy charges and simply breaking or walking into houses without a warrant.

Happens all over. We had "stop and frisk" in NY until it was ruled unconstitutional a couple of years ago. I was once pulled over on rt 1in NJ by a cop who just wanted a closer look at my Jaguar.

Got stopped and detained for about 45 minutes after crossing into Illinois from Missouri. Had Colorado plates. Cop thought I was smuggling marijuana but claimed 'I crossed a yellow line' which was total bs because I saw him pull out behind me and drove carefully as a result.
