Running my first 5k - wish me luck

3 months ago I decided to get fit. I gave up alcohol and started jogging. I would run out of breath after 50 yards. That was Nov 1, 2016.

On Feb 4, 2017 I will be running my first 5k! Wish me luck!

It is called the Soupers 5k. The people who finish the race get a bowl of soup from the soup kitchen. $30 entry fee goes to support it.

The reason I made the change was because I found myself staring into the abyss of alcoholism. I would drink at least 6 or 7 beers a day. Sometimes more. I would even come home for 'lunch' just to down a couple. In the summertime, when I'm in the garage fixing mowers I would drink a beer for every mower I fixed so it was not unusual to polish off a case in 2 days. All the signs were there so decided to just quit cold turkey.

One of the benefits of giving up the drink is that I can never get a DUI, I've lost weight and now I am full of energy and never tired.

Be very careful of your knees!

In the UK there has been an alarming increase in people (mostly in their forties!) who need hip and knee replacements because they have been pounding the streets. Jogging or running isn't necessarily as simple as it might seem - if you ain't got the right technique you can damage yourself.

*encouraging message*

I think that when you are done with the 5k you'll be like "that was not bad, I should find a longer one next time". something about the 'running in a big group' dynamic.

Good work on getting the motivation to actually do it, even if you lapse back or stop running, you will know you can do it again...

Sorry to hear that.

Bicycles are another option. There's only an impact if you crash.

Or see my thread on powerlifting.

Congratulation on the good moves. Drinking calories is an industrial thing, not natural.

Swimming and stretching seem to do the best for me but I don't have a pool. I would need my own olympic size pool, that's my excuse.

I got a pack of PBR longnecks recently because I remembered it was better than expected when I got some back in the 70's. Once again, better than expected. Low expectations are ok sometimes.
