got me a free toyota truck!

a neighbor just gave me 89 sr5 Toyota pickup with a V6. it had thrown a rod. It has a 5 speed.

what is the best way to get it back on the road?

a JDM motor seems very reasonably priced for this car. is it something I can put it myself or should I just have a shop do it? approx. how much do they charge for something like this?

I'd put in a 617 turbo!

(Just kidding)

Keep it stock, keep it simple.

Get one from a upullit yard. Tell them what you want and give them your number. As they assess the vehicles they process they can choose a good one for you. $200 or so. Maybe less.

Watch CL for a running parts car.

Roger Tom! It would be far from the first time a Toy truck has been backfitted with an OM617.

i originally planned to drop a jdm engine into the truck but as it turns out they can't import that motor here because it is too old? i don't have the time and patience to rebuild a motor so i might just pass on the free truck altogether unless you guys have a better suggestion.

Can't find a good used engine? There are search engines for searching...cars_parts.com(?) not sure of the exact address.

you are correct. I was searching for JDM (Japanese domestic market) motors and found none.

turns out the remanufactured ones are actually plentiful. ranging from $1k for the short blocks to the $2k for complete engines.

ask around in yards and you will find a good deal, I recently redid a few passenger car engines in my home, parts are plenty for these toyotas and they dont break the bank.

Watch out for really cheap deals on engines - A long diagnosis story of a fresh replaced mazda 3 (2.3) that wont stop pinging at normal temperature turned out to be that some moron of a machine shop put 2.0 litre high compression mazda miata pistons in the 2.3 block bumping the compression from its normal 9.5:1 to 10.6:1 or even more as the head was milled quite a lot too.

Buy engines from a good name only.
