Palo Dura is a place I think I want to see. I haven't been back that way since I learned of its existence. What is your impression? Is it good for a drive-through or a place to stay for a while?

I liked the German influence in Fredricksburg in the hill country. Been a while, I was there in the early 90s. Biergartens, bakeries, and stories of settlers and training Luftwaffe pilots.

Palo Duro is nice. Camping is on the floor of canyon and is great. They have CCC cabins up on the rim for rent too. We hiked there last year, just stayed overnight and left this time. Not much besides hiking there. (there were hunters around this time and last year) Good video at the visitor's center and the museum at the university in Canyon is a must see. Historically, the place was important to the Commanche.

I didn't retire for those reasons. I still very much enjoyed teaching. The main burdens were bureaucratic and the administration struck a hard blow at a great program I had invested in and it put me over the edge since additional years of employment weren't going to improve my retirement income. My friends who are retired administrators have no doubts about the benefits of retirement.

June through August the semi-cheesy musical "Texas" is performed in the Palo Duro amphitheater. While not likely to put Hamilton out of business anytime soon, it is entertainment and not a bad little synopsis of Texas history.

Fredericksburg has grown and changed tremendously in the last 20 years. It's a bit touristy now, with the requisite ups and downs that come with that business. Plenty to do for a couple of days, especially if you are into cycling, riding a motorbike, or food & wine. The German veneer is a perhaps a bit thinner than in days past, though certainly still present.

I used to go hunting on the family ranch near Boerne. On rare occasions we'd go to F'burg or New Braunfels to eat supper. This was in the early 1960's. Since then the ranch was sold and broken up. I can't ever go back. I look at GoogleEarth and the sprawl breaks my heart. Thomas Wolf was right.

I meant to snap some pics of Mckittrick canyon.
a very un texas place.

as beautiful as you might find at the west side of Texafornia,
its a side canyon off behind the shoulder of Tx's "El Capitan"
Guadalupe peak, if you hike up the side trail in the west side of mckittric, at the top you have crossed into New Mexico.

Next time you come down to tejas bring yer Wheaties Tom,
You can hike up the face of Guadalupe peak --then across to the Mckittrick summit trail head and down into the choice place to photograph -all in one day, I know you got the stamina!

Guadalupe Mtns are beautiful. You go from a desert basin to alpine meadows in a matter of a few miles (horizontal distance). The view from El Capitan at night is memorable.

If you get in some remote country and you find yourself on a trail most likely your following an old deer trail ,these were common for indians to hunt along and arrow heads can be found at a steady pace.I like the Fredricksburg area, clear river water and miles of winding roads.
