Saluting in the military.
Ms Mash was in Navy boot camp back in the stone ages (30 yrs ago). She never completed it due to the fact that she blew out her knee and was never able to pass the physical again.
We were watching TV and the question of saluting came up. She remember being trained that if you do not hav a cover you do not salute or something to that effect. We looked it up but could not find anything referring to that. Any ideas?

Saluting
Navy and Marine Corps do not salute when uncovered.
Army and Air Force do salute when uncovered. |

On a ship, you salute a superior officer once per day except the Captain, who gets saluted every encounter. But don't be stupid about it. Like if you're working with both hands and some superior officer comes by you keep working. It' kind of iffy, because you salute if all your doing is sweeping or swabbing the deck. But if you're welding or up to your elbows in grease, keep working.
My division officer aboard ship was a fine officer. Grew into his role from MIT mechanical engineer to ensign -- nervous as all get out the first 6 months or so. But he had excellent training under the chief engineer and the CPO's (E7 and above). By the time he made LT(jg) he was a stand-up guy and worthy of a salute. As an example, he was trained to do each job of his subordinates to about the E-3 level, on his own initiative. Worked for me for a week as assistant oil king. I'd salute him in the morning at quarters then he would come to the oil shack and work with me for several hours a day for a week. After a few months of doing that with each of the watch standers you'd be damned confident he understood orders he was giving. He retired as a commander (O-5) and runs a research lab. I haven't seen him in 40 years but we exchange email frequently. IIRC, nobody salutes anybody on the flight deck or flight line. Too easy to confuse a salute with with a hand signal. Wait, I think the cat officer salutes the pilot at the moment of immanent launch. Have to ask an airdale. |

I have been told that in the Army you never salute indoors. This is regardless of the situation. Is this still current? Was it ever true?
An exception would be for a Medal of Honor winner who is saluted by everyone regardless of rank or situation. And is that true? |

This is getting pretty far from the OP inquiry. Let's not confuse poor David.

IIRC, salute for the medal is a voluntary courtesy.
Dunno about soldiers indoors. Or airmen. |

One of my favorite Forest Gump scenes is when he and Bubba first meet Lieutenant Dan and salute him...."Goddamnit Gump, don't ever salute me here. You're gonna get me killed!..Charlie would like nothin' better than to grease an officer!:
