Safest way to lend tools?
Can I lend tools using paypal?
Will it allow me to refund the deposits put down to cover the cost of the tool in case it's broken or not returned? Thanks

Paypal will allow you to refund a payment. The fees will reverse as well.

I'm not sure, both parties could complain that they received it broken and want a full refund...

I have never used that function but PayPal had a way of accepting a core charge.
I think the easiest way would be to let the loaner know they are paying $X for rent and $XXX as a core. When the tool is returned in reasonable condition you will, via a transfer of funds as if they were a friend, return their core deposit. You might set a reasonable time frame on the funds return. Such as five business days after the tool is received at your place. This would give you time to examine the tool for excessive wear. I 'rent' weird tools from AutoZone now and then. I just leave a deposit equal to the price of the tool. That way if I don't return it I have just bought it. Which could be another revenue stream for you. I have only once used a tool I thought I should own so when I returned I asked if they had any new ones. They had to order it but I got it at a price for less than I could buy it online. So if a customer wants they could convert their rental into a purchase. They would just need to let you know and that would be the end of it. Then you would have to buy a new tool, but if you could pick up a few bucks selling a used tool for more than they could buy an new one......? |

Have it documented in writing. Mark your name on the tools just the same. Keep photographs of the tools if needed (and include it as part of the contract).

As I mentioned, paypal allows you to refund a customer and returns the associated fees. If part of the money is rent and the other part deposit, you can do a partial refund. In that case, only the fees on the refunded money is reversed. This is a feature of every single payment you've ever made on PP.

Many years ago I loaned a prechambers puller via this forum. It was a really expensive tool. I never named the person on this forum, but I didn't get it back. THEN about ten years later it arrived in the mail. Guess he was kind of a slow mechanic.

LARRY! Great to see you back. Hopefully you have only been away due to being disgusted with us and not due to any personal problems.

In spite of losing my wife of 42 years a little over a year ago, my life is going wonderfully. I have bought a faster plane for domestic traveling and got back about three weeks ago from an amazing three week vacation in Europe. I put 5700 km on a car in three weeks, visiting eight countries. I lost my wife unexpectedly on a Tuesday and was scheduled for my last work day before retirement on the following Friday. Despite many hateful comments about me on this forum calling me deranged, I am very balanced and capable of working through such a shocking life event. Such an event will make you better or make you bitter. In my case after the dust settled, I came out better. I hope you are doing well also.

Regarding hateful remarks, c'mon, that door swings both ways. I like what one old zen master said: "don't seek for the truth, only cease to cherish opinions." I think most all of us aren't as smart as we think we are. Sounds like a fun trip. Keep on keepin' on!

The safest way is probably not to.

As stated by a few already - don't do it.
Tell whoever wants to rent your tools to go rent from someone that rents for a living.
