Awesome Race!
David gave us a good scare when his car started letting off smoke with each gear change at the beginning of the race! Talk about luck, the apparent problem simply vanished never to surface again, I thought for certain the engine would let go and let poor David down, but it wasn't so. I think Illmor / Mercedes may have found some power over the last couple of months, time will tell??? Go McLaren, Go Mercedes! |

I just watched it on TV. Finally a win! I think David was throwing up a smokescreen... probably learned it from his good friend Bond, James Bond.

Great race indeed! BTW-- any Grand Prix fans know if the chicane at the end of the straightaway has allways been there? Or was it added to slow things down a bit. Those guys really come flying out of the tunnel. In my dreams I get to do a couple of laps on that course!

The circuit is
The circuit looks the same as it was in 99. How well did Coulthard qualify? If I remember right there is not much passing possible.

Are you taking about the chicane after the tunnel and before the hair-pin? I think that is fairly new, I remember a TV commentator saying something to the effect that it's purpose is to bring top speeds down.
I think it's been around less than 10 years? And Kuan, you may be quite right. A little psych'ing out on Montoya and Schuey maybe. Did anyone else smile and cheer when Montoya's BMW let go? BTW, if one of these F1 chassis companies came up with a tandem 2 seater and let the public buy full out race laps with a Pro in control, lets say 5 laps, what would you guys be willing to pay for such a thrill? |

The chicane was originally there but not as pronounced. It was moved toward the center in 1955. The chicane as we saw it yesterday was built in 1986 and named "Nouvelle Chicane." (d'oh)

Thanks for the answers on the chicane. I spent an hour or so looking for the answer on the internet to no avail. I should have known that all I had to do was pose the question on this site and someone would know. Soup to nuts, beer to wine, and of course, cars----it is all here at MercedesShop.
