Road Trip!!!!!!!!!!!
We are planning a road trip this fall. two week trip leaving last week of Oct.
The tentative plan now is to leave DFW, drive to Memphis.. over night.... Drive to Lexington, KY. Spend 2 days there to see a few sights. Perhaps battle grounds, a plantation, historic district...???? Then we drive to Niagara Falls. Not sure if we should stay on the NY side or cross over to the CA side. Spend 2 days there to see the sights. Drive to Lancaster PA and do the Dutch country thing for 2 days. Drive to Atlanta, GA. Stay there for 2 days and then drive home. Neither of us have ever been to any of these places. Any recommendations for accommodations, things to do/see and things to avoid would be appreciated. |
Do not attempt to take firearms into Canada. Also radar detectors are illegal and will be confiscated. Personal experience on both counts.

Try to spend a day or so in Savannah, Ga.
|
^^And peel off a day from Lancaster, PA.
|
done it many times, I don't go thru TN.
I cruise up to popular bluff Mo and then head across straight into KY where the miss and ohio meet, you would be in the extreme bottom tip of Il for about 100 yards before getting on the other bridge to ky. from Wickliffe its boonie roads to Paducha and the first parkway. you cut many miles off. |

I would do Savannah over Atlanta for sure. Savannah is charming and historical. Atlanta is mostly just a headache. Lancaster is alright but generally agreed it's not somewhere i would spend 2 days on a road trip. I'd make a day for Philly if you're into historical stuff, it's only an hour from there, valley forge and Brandywine are also in between. I'd be happy to give touristy recs in Philly or if you want to hit some good "normal" places like the rest of us here let me know.

I'd stay on the Canadian side of the falls and be sure to eat in the fabulous Inn overlooking the falls. In Lancaster valley look for my Walgamuth Cousins. I hear they are thick out there!
|
Definitely Savannah over Atlanta. Or consider Charleston as well.
Ride the Bourbon trail in Kentucky. Catch a distillery tour. Philly has a nice downtown. Worth a visit if nearby. |
Savannah and Charleston are both great cities. In Charleston they have the civil war submarine to look at. Cool!

I visited Oswego NY years ago. Somewhat east of Niagara Falls. A drive sort of along the shore of Lake Ontario could be nice. I know I got a real kick out of swimming in the lake at Oswego. |

Road Trip!!!!!!!!!!!
I was raised in Chas and live in Savannah. I watched the Hunley recovery. Amazing effort and execution.
Beautiful cities with lots to do. |
Corning glass works? Was a free interesting place on our travels years ago. Might be on your route to the falls. Just looked on the net. Nineteen fifty admission now.
The Canadian side of the falls gives you a much better view and might be even safer. The American side of the falls has suffered a massive economic decline. Consider doing the maid of the mist boat. They garb you in raingear and take the boat up close to the falls. |

Both of the downtowns reek with old south architectural charm. Painted ladies galore. |
