ww2 warbirds

They had a small group of ww2 warbirds at the Purdue airport yesterday and this morning. The sound they make is just fantastic!

The flight pattern takes them nearly directly overhead of my house.

I just now ran outside to see if I could see them, but there are too many trees unless they are directly overhead.

The sound though is wonderful.

They had a B 17 a B 24 and a P 51 mustang. (one of the prettiest planes ever to take the sky.)

Next time you are near Cincinnati - this place has one of the 50(?) remaining P-51's around...

Tri-State Warbird Museum in Cincinnati Ohio

Kinda steep to get in, and not real friendly for my young children, but awesome local dudes who are keeping a small fleet of old aircraft going...

But if you are near Cincinnati, the AF museum in Dayton isn't much farther away...

Yeah, the one at Dayton would take a week to see at leisure.

Tom,

That sounds like some of the Colling's Foundation Warbirds. They're out your way for s few days. Lafayette, IN - The Collings Foundation
Be here again in early Sept.
I went up in their B-17 a few years ago. The Nine-O-Nine. Immaculate condition.
Well worth the $400.00. You ought to give it a shot.
Aircraft - The Collings Foundation

They have a 2-seater P- 51. Now you're talking money to take a spin in that.

Short video to wet your whistle.

When you hear the sound of the fighter planes you wonder how they could ever get close to anyone to attack them.

But I put this question to a guy with a few of these aircraft about 30 years ago. He said he would arrange a small demo.

One Sunday I went to a park on the east side of Dallas and myself and several friends took up a spot on a picnic table. The park is surrounded by trees on three sides.

All was silent and then suddenly there was a warplane over our heads. And I mean with no warning at all. The pilot did this several times and we never heard him coming. Well, we might have had two seconds tops to respond, or just enough time to look up and realize there was nothing we could do.

He later explained that if he came in low and fast, low being just above the trees, we would not see him or hear him. He would know where the target, being us, was because he had seen it from thousands of feet up. Then, when he came in to attack, it would be at a height, angle and speed that worked to his advantage and not ours.

You often see fighter planes in films flying very low. There is a reason for this: Because it really, really works.

It has been a long time but I think the aircraft he used was called a 'Texan'.

Not to go up in the B-17. You are, however, seatbelted in sitting on the deck. Once up to altitude you can get up and walk around except in the tail and the flight deck. On the trip I took a passenger was with his grandfather who crewed in a B17 in WWII. Nice.

The Texan AT-6 was an advanced trainer. Also called the Harvard. I think Australia used the wings from them for their fighter the Boomerang. It was used only in rear area defense.
Only 50 Mustangs. I think 35,000 were made. There were only 10,000 Zeros made. About the mid 80's, there were only 3 flyable ones. I read an article recently, that there are 10 flyable now. One recently flew over Japan. A Japanese business man bought the one salvaged in Paupa New Gunie (sp) some years back for 3M. Had it restored to flyable condition.

Pity, then, the poor folks who live near a Naval Air Station with F-18s, like Oceana VA.

Flight Operations and Noise Concerns

or email: OceanaComments@navy.mil and provide the following information:
Date
Time
Name
Address
City/State/Zip code

Nature of your complaint

NOTE: Your concern will not change the flight pattern of current operations or change the hours we are operating. Flight Operations at Naval Air Station Oceana and Naval Auxiliary Landing Field Fentress are conducted around the clock seven days a week. The airspace that Oceana normally operates in covers a 4.3 mile radius and like civilian aircraft, there is not an established limitation to where military aircraft can fly.

I experienced a B1 doing a low pass where it came in silent one time. We did not know it was there until it was right on top of us. Scared the crap out of me and the family.
