considering a good used late model GLK of E class
 

Got the dreaded call from the lovely Ms engatwork this past Fri. Seems CPS died and left her stranded with the bull dog (05 E320 wagon showing 280k miles). Took about an hour to get there and get her, dog and car home. All I have heard since is talk of a "new car". Keep in mind new car to me is not the same thing as new car to her. She threw out the name Suburu because the oldest step daughter and her hubby drive fairly new Subbies. Anyway I'm looking at either a GLK350 non 4Matic, '14 E350 or '14 E250. Personally Im leaning towards to E250 but it is at high end of price range. I will have to upgrade car diagnostic tools if I get the 2014 cars.

I've actually been looking out for a 05/06 CDI for a couple of years but I'm thinking she is getting tired of me "looking".

She averages 10k every three months and is currently driving a 98 E300 which is probably what she should be driving. What do yall think?

40k per year? Something from Toyota, rear-wheel-drive, without a CVT. Tacoma crew cab? RWD 4Runner?

I would choose a GLK over an E-Class. I like the way they drive much more, but that's just me. Lots of nice CPO GLK's out there...........

Just got home in a new to me and the lovely Ms engatwork white 2014 GLK 350, non 4matic. Got a good price on it and traded in a 2005, 290k mile E320 wagon. Needless to say I did not get much for the wagon but it still sure drove out good on the interstate.

What sold me was the "elevation" of the drivers seat in regards to getting in/out.

What is the CPS that failed?

Rear wheel drive and white. Once they are on the lift it takes less than 5 mins to change cps.

Man I'm sold on the GLK. A couple of things are how easy it is to get in and out of and after keeping tires on a 05 E320 for awhile to see the 800 treadwear rating on the tire sidewall:). I'm not a fan of the fuel mileage but man what a nice ride. The wife is going from, currently, a 1998 E300 with a cassette player to a 2014 GLK with all kinds of neat chit on the navigation. I don't have any doubt that it will be as good a ride at 250k miles as it is now with the proper care. It has that "feel" to it if you know what I mean. I'm starting to like it as much or more than the E class.

This is the first car in 20 years that every thing worked when I drove off the lot. I think the last three were towed to the shop and sold to me after I got them going:).

Timely post as I'm also looking at 2014-2015 GLK's for the missus. Might I inquire to what kind of pricing and mileage of the vehicle?

77k miles, $23k. No CPO. The lovely Ms engatwork loves it. Seems to average 23/24 mpg on interstate at 80.

Ms Mash has a '13 GLK 350, Polar White, beige leather, pano 2WD, no GPS.

We have had it for 2 yrs now. She loves it. Rides very smooth. We took it to Taos and avg about 24mpg with a roof box. So far no issues. About to turn 40k.

Rolled through 80k miles this past weekend.

Ours is at about 36k

Hit the 100k mile mark the past couple of weeks and I'll say MB did a good job in regards to intake manifold removal on this engine. It was easier to change plugs in than the previous v6 with the twin plug set up.

It continues to be a pleasure to drive.

I recently joined the GLK owners club. Picked up a 2015 GLK250 Bluetec with 68k on it. Black exterior, Black ash trim with light seats interior (tex). Pano roof, no navigation or driving aids. So much different from the 420SEL I was driving, it was finally time for something newer, capable in winter, and not draining $85 a week in gas. Mine is 4matic (as all 250's are). The torque of the OM651 is nearly enough to cause wheel spin on all 4 wheels in the right situations. :eek: Also I drive like I stole it and have yet to see less than 28mpg, and on steady drives of 70-80mph I can get nearly 36 with the A/C on! Its no slouch either, 0-60 is delivered in torque filled quick bursts in about 7 seconds.

I'm just astonished more people didn't buy OM651 powered Mercedes vehicles when they were available.

The level of power, refinement and efficiency are really extraordinary but with the VW issues its pretty much killed all desires for people on North American to purchase Diesel products from any manufacturer.

I'd been waiting for years and years for Mercedes to bring some smaller displacement Mercedes diesels back to the USA and when the GLK250 became available in 2013 I got one as soon as I could get my hands on one.

It's been the best new car I've ever purchased, liked the engine so much I bought a 2014 E class with the same engine. Planing on maintaining them to a high standard and not buying any more cars for another couple of decades.

I've taken our GLK on two cross-country trips and it returns mid to high 30's on the highway at 70-75MPH, the E250 with a lower wind profile is in the low to mid 40's at the same speeds.

The torque from the 2.1 liter engine is just hard to understand, I've got lots of seat time driving OM615 powered 220D's in the 1980's and I still shake my head every time I'm climbing a 6,000 foot mountain at 70MPH in 7th gear at 1700RPM. I keep thinking of the times I did similar climbs in the 220D in 3rd gear, wide open throttle going 50 MPH with black smoke pouring out the back as cars/pickups wizzed by me at 75MPH.

We've come a long way in 40 years.

The twin sequential turbo-charger setup is very cleaver and the high pressure injection system actually uses multiple injections events per combustion cycle, which I think is why they are able to get 370 lb/ft of torque out of 2.1 liters of engine displacement.

I now have 115K miles of ownership experience with the OM651 and the only issue I've had was a faulty intercooler hose going from the high-pressure turbo to the intercooler. It's a relatively soft rubber hose and it developed a split on the seam of the hose, very hard to see because under pressure the hose separated but when de-pressurized the seam went back into place and it looked like a good hose. From a visual inspection standpoint it certainly didn't look like a bad hose and since there was no liquid in the hose you couldn't see anything dripping.

Agree completely about your observations about the solidity of the GLK, it seems at least as substantial than any W123/W126 I've ever driven.

One other observation, the run-flats are not really optimal. When I replaced the tires on our GLK I opted out of the run-flat scheme and there was a substantial improvement in ride comfort and steering response. If you're OK with a couple of cans of fix-o-flat as the spare tire solution I'd recommend the switch away from run-flats.

Other than routine maintenance - brakes, filters, oil changes, etc..... everything on the front of the engine that is operated by the serpentine belt has now been replaced. The a/c compressor clutch gap got excessive and quit pulling in about a month ago and the alternator had front to back shaft movement. Everything new went in except the alternator. I purchased a used one. The head lights were changed the same time the compressor with Depo lights. The plastic on the old ones were showing their age. The cam magnets on bank 2 were replaced because of a fault code on them.

It has been a really good, reliable vehicle.

Nice when any car proves reliable over time.

Replaced fuel pump at 295k miles today
 

Car is still performing flawlessly. Had a fault code "the fuel pressure in the system is too low. There is an internal fault". This code was in the car during last service so kinda as a preventive measure I went ahead and replaced the fuel pump and filter today. Straight forward job. The code has not come back.

Car continues to perform flawlessly.

Replaced the front struts with ready to install units today at 303k miles. I was seeing a little unusual tire wear on the front tires and observed some leakage from the passenger side. I could tell a difference after replacement in the way it drove.

Just to update and it could change tomorrow but I'm still on the original MAF sensors, O2 sensors and cats. I try to only run Chevron, Exxon, Marathon or Sunoco premium, no ethanol if available.

The Comand failed on the GLK. I like the car so much I'm going to replace it. They are quite pricy from dealer but I have found one for $1800. At 312k miles the Comand unit cost as much as the car is worth.

Still one of the best cars I've ever owned.

Found a good, used Comand system, installed it and had the local MB dealer rework the vin on it and get it up and running:). Total out of pocket was approximately $900.

Do you think that you can get 400k out of it?

As of right now I don't see why not.

Put the 500k badge on the grille this past week:).

I added a 88k mile 2014 GLK250 to the fleet today

Well after closer inspection of the vehicle I walked away from it and got my deposit back. It has been on the beach too much for me. I won't purchase one if it has been in salt and is showing rust on all the fasteners.

You would not be happy with any used cars which lived above the Mason-Dixon Line. When I was a kid living in a northern state, I went shopping for cheap wheels, and was bowled over by a shiny blue 1969 Ford Mustang convertible for sale. Looked great...until I opened the trunk lid and found holes in the trunk floor flanking the gas tank...

Long time ago I had a guy from DC bring a w123 wagon to me. Any bolts/nuts you touched under that car either broke or had to have a lot of heat on it to disassemble it. I don't need that kind of headache.

Just a way of life at the beach. Somehow my w212 is spotless, despite having its entire life here. I just assume the POs took pretty good care of it (guy I bought it from did). The newer mercs seem to have pretty good corrosion resistance. I dont think I have seen many w211-onward mercs with as mucb as a rotted fender.

Good reading about the GLKs. Both gas and diesel.
