All you wanted to know about top fuel dragsters

Pretty insane.

The speed specs are pretty nuts when compared to our daily drivers.

- 05 seconds 74 mph @ 21 ft
- 1.0 seconds 113 mph @ 75 ft
- 1.5 seconds 162 mph @ 125 ft
- 2.0 seconds 212 mph @ 231 ft Fuel consumption is at 95 GPM
- 2.5 seconds 248 mph @ 420 ft clutch plates are starting to weld together.
- 3.0 seconds 275 mph @ 650 ft 5,000 lbs of down force acceleration down to 5g's
- 3.5 seconds 293 mph @ 783 ft many of the spark plgs have burned away so the engine is dieseling.
- 3.85 seconds 315 mph @ 1000 ft

Apparently the engine has to be rebuilt after every run. New plugs, pistons,
conx rods, clutch plates ... etc They make 8 runs per race so they have 8 engines on the truck. The rear tires are good for about 2 miles (8 runs) and cost $700 a piece.

The speed is what gets me. In 1 second they have exceeded any US speed limit by a good clip, they have only traveled 75 feet and only 1 second has passed. That is just nuts to me. They are leaving the line at 5Gs. A carrier launch is 'only' 2.5 G's. How the heck do you stay conscious at 5G's?

This impresses the heck out of me.

I need to stop surfing You Tube.

10 guys tear down a top fuel engine in about 7 min.

They are rockets!

I found this interesting. It's a self built TT LS powered RX3 that runs 6 second quarters, over and over and over again without engine rebuilds after every run.

never liked funny cars,or rails.I like pro stock with no chutes, something you can drive everyday. Even nascar is using funny cars, there no v8 toyota,s with rear wheel drive. Racing use to show which automaker had the best, now its dinosaur v8s

I'm no fan of Nascar or drag racing but I wouldn't call these cars dinosaurs. The technology that goes into them is heavily researched and developed, absolutely cutting edge and painfully expensive. Pushrods, live axles and tube frames are dictated by the rules. The devil is in the details.

Howdy All,
I'll be glad when they go electric.

Already there: Formula E. Last I saw it was on Fox Deportes, so I hope you're bilingual.

Howdy Skippy,
Caught it, I think, on nbcsp. It looks like it may be on Fox sports in the future. Waiting for some others to go electric.

Formula E has been on local channels here. I really like it but my first reaction is why they don't go faster in the straights! Been watching too much F1 I guess.

My favorite class also Pro-Stock. Except none of those have run for at least 25 years W/O a chute. I payed attention for a while about the 10.5" class. As I understood it not much in the way of engine configuration restrictions, just had to run a maximum 10.5" rear tire.

There you had to get to know the track, set up your suspension and gear ratio for a good hook up so ultimate dollar$ $pent on HP were not always the winners.
BTW how about the last two years pf Pro-Stock no more hood scoops due to fuel injection, no more carbs.
