I lived in NYC for two months; most people with 'normal' salaries go on to move in Astoria, Brooklyn or Queens. I was lucky enough to be using a friend's apartment for free, but everything aside was ridiculously expensive —from a loaf of bread to a cappuccino. Manhattan is largely unattainable unless you share a broom closet or move past 110th Street.

I dunno man, I've been looking at Zillow and it seems like $500k buys you a run down tear down property. No central air, no central heat... etc.

I grew up in the city, now live in the 'burbs. Manhattan has become untouchable. When I was a kid there were parts of Manhattan...above 96th st, Hell's Kitchen, Harlem,Washington Heights, even the upper east side...where rents were reasonable and middle class people lived. I'm not sure that anyplace in Manhattan is affordable today unless you luck out and inherit a rent controlled apartment or you're poor enough to live in a project. The outer boroughs are getting pricey, too, but there are still modest neighborhoods in the Bronx or Staten Island. Also consider the near suburbs...Bronxville, Yonkers, Mt Vernon, Crestwood, Tuckahoe, Hoboken, Jersey City...they have very nice, reasonably priced housing close to railroad stations. From Bronxville to Grand Central is a half hour train ride, Hoboken is 20 minutes from Penn Sta or WFC.

There are some low-rent apartments in some of the newer or newly renovated buildings. I think developers have to "set aside" (not sure what that means) a certain number of low rent units as a condition of receiving federal money or federal mortgage insurance.

Moved to NYC in 1975..rented a 1 BR on Bleecker St for $125 a Month, Moved to a 2R on Waverly West of 7th Ave for $200 a Month, then to a 1200 sg ft Loft on 6th Ave and 30th St for $250...1982 moved to Queens and had the 1st floor of a House for $250 a Month then bought a Co-Op apartment in Whitestone for $110K lived there for 32 years and just sold it for $300K and moved to Mom in Laws 2 BR after she willed it to wife and I when she passed. It is worth 1 Mil easy...

Only way to do it is work the deal, with roomates. Moved to ny to go to college with 1k in pocket in the 80's Lived in a dorm for a year while scoping out Apts to rent. Got a 3 brm rent stabilized place for 525 with 2 roomates. Lived there for 8 yrsl left when the rent was 825 to buy a house down the street for less than 200k. Sold house in 2000 and left town cause the kids had to go to school and the local schools sucked. House sold forore than triple what we paid. Same house now sells for over 2 mil.
I never lived in Manhattan, but then I could always afford cab fare home cause my rent was so cheap!
