I'm 79 (will be 80 in April). Let me let you on to a little secret. At my age, cutting you toe nails is a real burden. That is especially the situation if you have a bad back, arthritis, sciatica in either leg, or are over weight. (I have more than one of those problems.) I've been hobbling around for a couple of months -- walking like an old man. Today, I spent roughly two hours cutting eight of my toe nails, using my Craftsman deluxe miniature wire cutters and a Revlon toe nail cutter. I reserved the two big nails for later in the week. That two hours freed me; I'm now walking like I'm in my 60s.

A few years ago, a good friend (now deceased) told me that when I reach 80, I should find a good podiatrist, because I would need someone who was trustworthy to cut my nails. I've reached that stage in life.

Don't laugh when one of us talks about getting a Dremmel grinder or any thing else for this task. It is a problem you will have some day if you live so long.

One of my big toenails is 3rd generation. Lost the first one in grade school by dropping a manhole cover on it. The second time it was something silly in the shower with the drain . It is now very thick. I use a dremmell tool to grind it down a few times a year.
I'm still limber enough to be able to put my toes on the bathroom sink to clip my nails and dry between the toes every morning.
I know that it's possible to kill nail roots. I had a sliver of the other big toe nail removed. He basically cut the nail down the inside to the root to narrow it a bit & keep it from becoming ingrown all the time. Surprisingly little pain. Soft shoes for a few days. I'd think twice about removing your entire nail however. Google that one. There's free medical advice on everytrhing!
