Caprice Classic

I think my next car will be a Chevy Caprice Classic. One of the square ones from 77 to 89. Maybe one of the round ones that came after that but overall I prefer the shape of the square ones and their simplicity. A wagon would be ideal but I'll settle for a sedan. I figure with the 240D as a reliable backup/winter DD, a well sorted Caprice will do me nicely, with no car payments for the forseeable future.

- Peter.

Those make good cars. You can still find them as ex police cars in rural areas.

Around here most of the ex cop cars that come up for sale are Crown Vic's. I know they have a following but I just prefer the Caprice personally.

If performance matters you will like the sedan better. A lot of the wagons had an Oldsmobile 307, a reliable engine but light on power for a car as large as the wagon. Suspension upgrades should be easy with all of the police packages around.

Good luck!!!

Performance doesn't matter to me. I had an 84 Wagon that I should never have sold. I'm more concerned with simplicity, reliability and good AC.

Heres one near you. 9C1 police package. Dress like Elwood and play old blues tapes.

No. I wont be screwing around with it. Just simple, original and unmolested. It'll take me a while to save up the cash. I expect to be in a position to acquire a good one before next summer hits.

My father purchased a new '78 Caprice station wagon with the heavy-duty F40 suspension and a 350-4bbl. Compared to the gargantuan '75 Caprice wagon it replaced, it had good power and very tidy handling. One of my favorite stunts with this car was to approach a slightly elevated railroad crossing with the accelerator planted smartly into the carpet. My friends riding with me at the moment would make a bit of a fuss; gripping the dashboard and yelling bad words at me. Unlike their father's undersprung and undershocked '74 Torinos, which would pitch like a trawler in a hurricane and make all sorts of unseemly jolts and gyrations before bottoming out on the far side of the crossing, the Caprice would basically click over the crossing with all the poise of an Upper East Side debutante. Good car!

Neat clip. I think I'll be treating it with a tad more respect. I believe that with my 240D as a back up it should last me the rest of my motoring leben.
