It's in the rule book for the 70s version I have, so it's apparently been around for a while. We never play that way - causes more fighting than the game already does on its own! My parents nearly got a divorce over playing that game once in the 90s (not making it up or exaggerating either... They haven't played since!)

That's how we play it. It makes the game go faster.

My wife refuses to play monopoly.

I like playing with the grandkids. It teaches important rules about investing, such as if you have to sell off houses you only get half price, teaching the lesson of not over extending.

Always played as a kid. I cannot ever recall the game starting a fight. Just good family fun. Many times the game would never be finished and this rule would have made the games go quicker.

That's a funny rule. Almost as funny as putting cash in the middle of the board and getting a payday when hitting free parking.

I think it's one of the few games where most people don't really follow the rules.


One time a friend of mine started putting multiple hotels and houses on each block. I think I had 3 hotels on Boardwalk. Bud landed on it and he was instantly bankrupt

Settlers of Catan is a better game.
