You should call the cops and tell them what you think if them. Then ask for their help.

I don't think you need their permission just do not do it without telling them first, that is how I understand it. So very simple walk up to the fence and tell the dogs that you will be recording from now on.

Thank you for all the informative replies, great advice for handling the situation. It appears I have several options available to resolve the issue. I have a difficult time understanding someone who appears to be insensitive to his neighbor's right to peace and quiet.
After reading through the following website, I gained a better understanding of these insensitive types. Seems at the cellular level, they don't care about anyone......a prime example of sociopathic behavior..... Everything there is to know about chronic barking & how to stop it |

Why calling the cops may have a downside.......BTW, back when I worked for law firms, I saw this scenario play out with my own eyes.......the cops can quickly flip the situation and turn on the victim.....in the blink of an eye....
This quote from the following link sums up the sociopathic nature of "the authorities". "You can expect them to try to frame things in those terms if you give them the necessary information to work with, because remember, the last thing in the world the authorities want is for the focus to remain on their failure to protect the public health. Therefore, given the slightest opening, they will quickly try to turn things around by switching the focus over to you, and to any shortcomings or foibles that you were foolish enough to tell them about. You have my sympathies. We had a problem with dumbasses across the back fence who had three yapping weiner dogs for three years. Not as loud as your problem but damm annoying. They would literally bark 24/7 365. One of our other neighbors decided to do something. He involved the police, the HOA and the city. Turns out none were any use whatsoever. Even went as far as starting legal proceedings against the dumbass which dragged on and did nothing. Eventually the wife died and about a year later the ******* moved out. Point being. You'd think that there is some form of legal recourse in a situation like this. But I think it's going to depend on where you are and what the local authorities are like. I suggest you directly contact someone like the local Humane society or the city to ask for advice first.

I'm going to start with an outdoor microphone FIRST. A few years back the neighbor on the other side of me had a couple of great danes. When those dogs barked it felt like the house SHOOK. She went to work and appeared to be clueless to the fact the dogs barked NON-STOP while she was at work. Their non-stop 150 decibel barking would ruin your nervous system...... Thank goodness, she finally got rid of the dogs.
Before I put up outdoor cameras, I am going to talk to a lawyer first just to make sure they can't go after me for being a video voyeur. I'm convinced non-stop barking dog owners know city ordinances help them inflict torture on their neighbors......they simply enjoy making life a living hell on everyone who lives within earshot of their canine canons...... |

Have you talked to your neighbor?

Need to purchase outdoor microphone to record neighbor's barking dogs.....
Just walk around your yard recording the barking with your phone and a decibel meter. Video the decibel meter while they bark.
No violation of privacy and you get a recording of the noise. |

I'm still on the hunt for a microphone/camera setup for outdoor use. I'm afraid I'll have to purchase a DVR to record the neighbor's canine canons.
The recent buyers of the house immediately behind the barking dogs have just spent thousands of dollars on upgrades to their house BEFORE moving in. Are they ever going to be surprised once they move in!!! I figure they are not going to be too happy......I might be able to make them an ally in my fight for peace and quiet..... |

To be your own lawyer ,See what local laws have on the books ,any cases that you can find that show a winning verdict could be helpful for a good end to the barking borderline. The privacy does seem to be your capturing issue though ,how much will the law allow for court is apart of why lawyers keep in business and you out of being in one.I would setup a cheap harbor freight outdoor security camera ,non expensive black and white and does capture video and audio desently within 40 ft ,Ive used one in the past and you can capture this via a VHS machine,I did say not expensive.I think my whole cost was less than $90. The audio was ok ,video was ok ,you just need to show you at your home and the noise that the neighbors dogs invade upon that home. The audio is picked up by the camera piece ,it came with 50ft of transmitting line and is sensative enoug to pickup twilight hrs nut doest like direct sun ,most cameras do not..The night capture wasnt there but you can set out a light possible next to your fence to show a designated part of your yard identifing it as your yard only ,a drawing of perimeter for court reasons will allow an overview of property at that time .The early morning hours would be good as the sun comes up , this showing 5am til 9 am. .You then could capture 8pm til 12 pm .The 4 hrs being how long the VHS tape can record. You can condense this for court purposes with editing ,around 10 minutes of review at his bench if it gets to that stage. I Dont suggest the extreme but some people might do this and purchase a very good recording device ,buy an even better speaker system ,record their dogs and return their own nuissance back too their ears x 4 at 4am in the morning .This would make the local news but you know that only feeds these people .

For sure, I read about one guy who had barking dogs next door. He took a trash can and placed a car alarm inside then pointed the trash can at the house where the barkers lived. He then set the controls or timer to trigger the car alarm at 2:00 AM for ten minutes, then again at 4:00 AM for ten minutes.
The neighbors across the street complained they couldn't get any sleep. He told them that just as soon as they got involved with his problem he would look into getting control of the 'accidental' car alarm issue. Since the sleepless neighbors were tired of his car alarms, they started leaning on the owners of the barking dogs to STFU. Ultimately, the barking dogs ceased their loud barking. The power of numbers. |

Note: I shared this previously but will post again for your entertainment.
The day I tried to repair the fence THAT THEIR DOGS DAMAGED, their dogs were threatening to tear my hands off. Since I value the use of my hands, I went next door and knocked on their door to ask them to please bring their dogs inside so I could make fence repairs. I knocked on their door three times, third time LOUDLY. Although their cars were in the driveway, they would not answer the door. I had to wait four more weeks for them to go on vacation and take their canine canons with them before I was able to make repairs to the fence. After that, I decided I needed a third party to get involved, i.e. a lawyer or real estate agent or perhaps both. It amazes me that anyone would own large dogs and yet not take them for much needed walks. Shepherds need exercise and a job to do. It's obvious these canon canons are BORED to TEARS; they have no outlet for their energy. They start their barking at 6:00 AM and don't finish up until around 10:00 to 11:00 PM every day. The owner has made statements to me that they are 'security dogs'. I got news for her, a well trained security dog ONLY barks when their is an intruder present. Otherwise, they are like a car alarm that goes off ten times a day, the neighbors pay them no-never-mind. |
