Had a hell of a Christmas...and interesting New Year.

I moved back to Ohio, to the house I had built for my parents, so that I could care for my ailing mother. Her sight is poor due to macular degeneration, and she is no longer able to drive.

On the 24th, my 70 year old mother came down with a fever, that we thought was because of her cold. She went to lay down around 7, and my wife told her that she would wake her up for her evening meds at 10:30. When my wife went in, she was unable to wake her, and her fever had jumped to 106, according to our thermometer. We tried getting her bundled up so I could take her to the hospital, but she was fighting us and refusing to go...so I called 911 for the medics to come take her. They measured a fever of 105.8.

We got her to the hospital, and after a night and day worth of testing, it was determined that she had a bacterial UTI that became a double kidney infection...sepsis. The night of the 26th, while still in the hospital, she had a heart attack that resulted in a double by-pass. She's fine now. We were told by the hospital, as well as her team of doctors, that she is lucky that we were living with her, because if nobody were here to check on her, she surely would have died on the 24th.

I'm glad that she and I decided that I should have power of attorney for her health care, because she refused to leave with the medics, and I pulled out the papers and told them that she doesn't have that choice. I'm now in charge of her medications, her diet, making her appointments and making sure she gets to them...as well as sitting in the room during exams with her. She has the mind to handle it all on her own, but after the near death experience, she's not interested in doing it by herself...because she kept putting off going to the doc over the fever.

It's been an interesting end to 2017...what a crappy year that turned out to be.

Here's to hoping everyone's 2018 turns out well.

They took care of us, the very least we can do is return the favor when the time comes. Well done sir! Prayers for a better new year!

Glad you were there for her. We did same for my Mom in Law (Power of Attorney for Everything). Helped when she was in final stages last year, getting her out of horrible care center to home where she passed in her own bed.
