Am I in the minority where I happily pay a CPA to check and file my taxes?

You have to understand that the only 1099 most participants on this thread receive is SSA-1099, and that Dentugrip can't be written off as a business expense. Hiring a CPA to file their taxes is like hiring a Beverly Hills hairstylist to do Vin Diesel's hair...

Ugh. This last year and this current tax year are going to be interesting. Between marriage, buying a house, capital gains, absorbing property, starting 2 businesses, grad school, student loans, and adding 2 dependents - I'm like 99% sure I'm going to get audited. The couple of bucks I spend on a CPA is well worth it.

Howdy All,
Since someone has said this thread is weird, I'll throw my hat in the ring. I go to the senior citizens center and have the people there do it for me. Free.

Nothing sounds more promising than facing off the IRS with a $40 accountant...

Very few field audits of individual returns these days. Fewer office audits. Correspondence audits are the rule of the day for most folks. "You deducted X,Y and Z. Send us the proof." Or " We have income reported from A,B,C. We have proposed changes to your tax return...."

This is from an old article, but it has gotten worse. Trust me.

Often in a correspondence audit, taxpayer correspondence is not assigned to the auditor who reviewed earlier documents. Correspondence from the IRS bears only the name of a supervisor. If the practitioner calls the supervisor, the IRS typically refers the call to whatever employee is available. Also, correspondence tends to not be reviewed for several months, resulting in the IRS’ sending letters advising the taxpayer that it needs additional time to review it. When the IRS finally issues reports, in some cases the proposed adjustments are incorrect because it has not properly considered and evaluated documents and substantiation furnished by the taxpayer or his or her representatives.

I get several 1099's of different sorts. Have retirement pension, social security, wife's salary, etc. Turbotax works for me. If it gets any more complicated I'll tuck my tail and go to a real accountant.
