You can do a lot of Ubering for $30 a night plus less hassle. Parking in San Fran is very challenging. Street parking is hard core. Have to watch out for parking restrictions and that is assuming you can even find a spot. We spent the day at the port where Alcatraz tour boats leave and that was $40 just for the day.
Parking in SF is indeed hard core. I had a job for while in Pac. Heights (high rent) not far from downtown, we got off at 3:30. I sometimes got pizza at a great by the slice place in North Beach. Parking wasn't too hard at 4 pm but you had to hunt a bit.

When leaving, around 5 or so it got tighter. It was weird and uncanny but as you walked down the street, if you pulled your keys out suddenly there would be a car shadowing you, wanting your parking spot.

Tom, there's a unique tourist attraction on Pier 45 at Fisherman's Wharf: a WW2 submarine. Amazing to walk through it and get a feeling for what it would be like to live on such a boat.

https://maritime.org/pamphome.htm

Also to be found at Fisherman's Wharf of course, a boat taking you to Alcatraz. It's almost cliched and overdone but I got a kick out of it when I finally went.

If the wife likes art, take her to the Legion of Honor Museum. Grand museum, amazing building, amazing setting - in Lincoln Park out near the ocean. They have one of Rodin's large castings of "The Thinker" on display.

If you wish to go to the beach, and you take the route past the Cliff House restaurant, you'll be real close to an old favorite of an oddball tourist attraction: The Camera Obscura.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camera_Obscura_(San_Francisco,_California

I don't get it, I clicked on the link just above now and it said they had no page for it. OTOH, I entered "Camera Obscura (San Francisco, California)" just now into search and clicked on the link and wiki has a nice piece about with a photo. I don't get it but oh well.

Ah. You need to click on the link/question they ask at the top of the page.

It's in Danville, on the east side of the bay. Bit of a drive from the city, but certainly possible. I toured it last November. They had about 30 cars on display, but they were spectacular cars.

Regarding parking, it re.inded me of musical chairs. We.would walk around at night and never saw a single open spot. Had this image of the last one home having to stay in their car and just driving around aimlessly till sun rose.

Alcatraz was pretty interesting. Took the tour and learned a few things. Could not imagine calling that place home either as a prisoner or jailer.

I used to get massage from a woman in Haight Ashbury. I get why hippies liked it back when - beautiful and grand old homes. But wow, it's about as bad as North Beach for parking. I quickly learned that I needed to allow 20 to 30 minutes to find a spot. Once I saw a car pulling out maybe a hundred feet away and I'm thinking "oh yeah, I've got this one." Wrong. Another car pulled a quick U-ie and beat me to it. No hard feelings, I'd have done the same. And when you do find a spot, better make careful note of the intersection or you'll be looking for your car for a long time. Frequently 3 or 4 blocks away from your destination.

Alcztaraz. They said that guards lived on site with their families and that they rarely locked their doors. Also said (the audio walking tour) that on New Year's eve excursion boats would cruise nearby and they could hear women singing on deck.

Enjoy your trip. I have spent time all up and down the California coast and coastal cities and Monterrey/Carmel is by far my favorite.

Not trying to give you grief Tom but I'd avoid saying 'Frisco' while you are there. People are snobbish about it. It happens quite a bit in my experience - people want their local names pronounced right. My mother married a guy in Oregon and at the reception I said 'Or-e-gone' the last syllable pronounced like the word 'gone.' No, no I was told, it's 'Or-e-gun.'

I think in Missouri for example, if you don't pronounce it Missour-uh, if you put an 'ee' sound at the end you'll be marked as an outsider, and of course shunned, elbowed out of the way, etc.

Up in Washington, numerous cities are tricky to pronounce for newcomers. Puyallup, Mukilteo, Sequim, even Spokane and Yakima can be tricky for visitors. Once in the early 70s I was hitchhiking and some Californians picked me up and told me they were going to 'Yah-kee-muh.' I politely told them how it's pronounced: 'Ya-ki-mah,' the Ya a sound as in can, ki as in hit. Oh well.
