Runway excursion.

I love how spokes people try and used calm and leading terminology when describing something that went FUBAR.

A 737 was coming in for a landing at an airport in Turkey. They had some sort of issue and skidded off the runway, down an embankment and stopped just short of the ocean. And when I say just short I'm talking what looks like 40 or 50 feet.

This is how the airline described it.
Quote:
Pegasus Airlines said in a statement the aircraft, flying from Ankara to Trabzon, "had a runway excursion incident" as it landed but the 162 passengers, two pilots and four cabin crew were not injured
They had an excursion. Like a couple of people going on a casual walk on a path in the woods.

Pegesus.... I saw the pics. Not an excursion. Trust me on that.

Now with service directly to the beach! Be careful, you might encourage whatshisname.

Being serious, there were no injuries. The improvements in aircraft safety with better seats is impressive.

Still the safest form of transportation b a huge margin. What has always impressed me is that the airlines can evacuate a plane with in 90 seconds. The Air France flight 358 in Toronto that landed in a storm. They were able to evacuate close to 200 people with in 58 seconds. Not a single casualty. That impresses the hell out of.

Maybe the pilot was dodging illegal aliens, er, uh, undocumented immigrants?

"Excursion" is the term utilized in the industry (and FAA, NTSB etc) for just about any event when a plane leaves the paved surfaces. Well, anytime other than flight anyway.

Conversely, an Incursion occurs when a plane that has not been cleared onto a specific taxiway or runway enters it none the less.

I know, I just think it is a bit funny in light of the event that took place and what people typically associate with the term "excursion".

It must have gone over the edge in slow motion for there not to be any injuries. Is there a video of it?

Yes, there was an accident sometime in the not too distant past that led to drastic improvements in the accident worthiness of airliner seats.

Yes, improvements were made in ground procedures after an accident at Linate airport in Milan about fifteen years ago. There were many changes right down to terminology. A long time ago if a plane was cleared onto the runway to wait for permission to take off the term was; “position and hold.” The term now is “ line up and wait.” One seems as good as the other, but my point is that the procedures were examined to that level.
