Not sure how it is that people get attached to such weird ju-ju. Us and them, big time, over and over. Lately this thought keeps coming to me, it's from the oldest known Zen document, 3rd century CE:

Do not remain in the dualistic state.
Avoid such pursuits carefully.
If there is even a trace of this and that,
of right and wrong,
the mind-essence will be lost in confusion.

Not saying it hasn't been fun bro, but I may need to stop reading your posts.

It is weird and sad that people let bipartisan politics permeate every aspect of life and thought. Seems like an easy way to be miserable and angry.

One of my friends has a ranch that is overrun with them. Actually it was until we thinned out the herd. But they just keep coming back.

They have been a problem in Texas for the last 30 years at least. Out in west Texas you will see highway signs warning you of boar activity in the area. This is to let you know to not stop your car and get out at night.

But we never had any of them charge us in a group. We tried to shoot them up close. That didn't work. We needed to use .223 to take them out as they seem to be able to take a hit with a 9 mm and just keep going.

But even up close they didn't charge as a group. They will charge as individuals.

At least that was the way it seemed to us. We didn't do an in-depth study. We just shot them.

You pig ....hunter!

hard to beleive with the population density (human) they can't eat them up. Good opportunity for bow hunting tourism.

My neighbor at my warehouse/shop is way more ‘good old boy’ than me. We’ve talked about hunting them down by San Jose. There is some pretty rugged country 30 to 40 miles east and slightly south of San Jose. I’ve twice driven over to I-5 on Highway 152. We are talking wild country. A gorgeous drive by the way.

Might have to finally get that going. Who would’ve thought: ol’ cmac, an AR 15 owner. The tricky part will be getting geared up to butcher a hog or two.

The term "wild boar" is used pretty loosely. I wonder if those Japanese critters are true Wild Boar or if they're feral hogs; pigs gone wild. There's a difference, although they're related. On this continent there are no true Wild Boar. What's wreaking havoc in CA, TX and parts of the south are feral pigs.
About 10 years ago some rich dlckhead had a truckload of Texas feral hogs brought to AZ and turned loose on a ranch near here, in central AZ, for him and his buddies to supposedly hunt. As anyone with a lick of sense could imagine, most of them escaped their hunters' aim and have gone wild off into the desert. Our game and fish department is keeping their whereabouts pretty hush hush.
Given the amount of damage they're causing elsewhere, I wonder why they don't declare open season on this small but growing herd. Maybe they're hoping our substantial Mountain Lion population will keep them in check.
It's tasty meat. I've eaten a fair amount of "wild boar" that's harvested in Texas. Pigs are omnivores, like humans. They have remarkable intelligence and adaptability and can thrive almost anywhere. They're also bad tempered and unpredictable. Unprepared, I'd take an encounter with a bear sow with cubs over a herd of feral hogs any day.

It is a bit odd, not declaring war that is. I was under the impression that using dogs to hunt boar was not allowed in CA, apparently I was mistaken though I read that conditions for using dogs are proscribed, haven't researched those. This report from the Cal. Dept. of Fish and Wildlife says that in areas with heavy hunting pressure they are usually only active at night. Would seem that dogs would be preferable for those sorts of hunts.

https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Conservation/Mammals/Wild-Pig

I've seen TV reports of hogs digging up lawns near San Jose but I have yet to see one around here. Plenty of raccoons, some possums and skunks.

Regarding wild boar v. feral hogs in Japan, there was this pic in the article, looks more like a wild boar than many pics of wild, that is, feral hogs I've seen but I dunno.

dude, you live here in AZ??? Always thought you were in northern NV or CO for some reason. Anyway, whereabouts is this sooper sekret population of wild hogs? I have two bulldogs who don't mind getting their paws dirty, plus cut-collars & vests. I have hunted wild hogs with dogs in West Palm Beach, Florida and also up in Northern Fla. It's hella fun! The few hundred lbs of free pork doesn't hurt either.

He's up North in the Verde Valley area.

I doubt there's much of a chance for wild hogs down here. Not enough water or vegetation available. Maybe a few isolated areas around Arivaca, Turkey Flats or along the San Pedro. Might be some up around the heavily irrigated areas around the Central Valley and Yuma.

Collared Peccaries (Javelina) have/are adapted to the desert. They get most of their required moisture from vegetation. They're also mostly nocturnal.

Of course I've been wrong before.

They were let loose on a ranch near Camp Verde. My understanding is they are somewhere between the Verde and North valley.
CMAC: that pic does look more like a true wild boar, not a feral hog.
Tom: Javelina are all over the southern half of AZ, they are often referred to as "pigs" - that's what we call them around here, but they are in fact only distantly related to domestic pigs and wild boar.
