London-Sydney flight

Quote:
Qantas Flight QF9 completed its 14,498km (9,009-mile) journey from Perth in just over 17 hours.

The airline is using the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which is twice as fuel-efficient as the Boeing 747.

It is part of ambitious plans by Qantas to add ultra long-haul flights to its schedules.
I do not think I could do it. May be in 1st class but I make no promises. I love flying and I love to travel. Going to Australia is on my bucket list. I just do not think I can be on a plane for 15 hrs to go from here to Sydney much less the 17 hrs for this flight.

Perhaps someone will bring back a super sonic passenger plane.

It took longer than that to get from Ft. Dix, NJ, to Vietnam in 1968 and was pretty crowded.

Pops had always said his one week trip on the Queen Mary with a private room was OK, except for having to sharing it with some 2000 other army soldiers. Thanks for your service!

I've spent 12 hours Phoenix to London non stop in a 747. And a friend has done several San Franciso to Auckland NZ at 13 or 14 hours. Both were bad enough but you can at least get up and walk around a bit if you really need to. For me it's a toss up between having to endure the strain of such a non stop flight (I can never sleep on a plane) and the hassle/unpleasantness of having to change planes and deal with all the airport BS sometimes multiple times on a trip if you don't fly direct.

I flew from Texas to Thailand in a C-130 full of ground support equipment, (waited 3 days in Guam for the RF-4C's to come through, "EST-B" enroute support team-B) Took one week total. So much equipment we (15 men) had only the 'lawn chair' seating in the plane. Even had to sit at an angle, not enough room to have our knees straight out in front of us. At San Fran we got off the plane & sat in terminal midnite till 06:00, (engine trouble, reload everything in new plane. Got a C-130 with 3 bladed props, now no one could sleep!! 3 blade prop engines would not stay syncronized, I think AF finally replaced all 3 blade props for 4 bladed ones. You ever flew in one, you'd know what I'm talking about.

Honolulu, stayed on plane while refueling, got box lunches & cases of pineapple juice, but no water. I have hated pineapple juice for 50 years now.

Wake Island, got off plane & ate in chow hall. There they had a soft drink machine, full of beer, 10¢ a can!!

Guam, 3 days in the jungle waiting for Phantoms

Mactan Island, PI, chow hall. Then, the only pavement on the island was the runway. Roads crushed rock, everything green from the mold.

Then down around S Vietnam to Thailand and another 500+ miles north to Udorn.

Coming home, 15+ hours from Bangkok to Travis AFB nonstop.

Perth is my favorite part of Straya. I'm looking forward to the LAX to Perth route to open.

I agree about the NS vs change plane deal. I cannot sleep well on a plane either. Took business to Milan and back from Paris. Might have dozed off a few times but my brain cannot shut off on a plane. Also it is hard for my 6'4" frame to get comfy.

My longest flight was a 12 hr gig from LHR - LAX. I could not wait to get off. it was just too bloody long. I do not think I could do another 5 hrs on top of that.
