is there a website where one can see a list of vanity plates in one's state already taken?

It used to be DMV had a list of them here in Cal. I haven't checked in the last 30 years.

In NY, when you punch in your selection, they tell you if it’s available.

Actually I was thinking of some abbreviated version of Tangerine for the Cobra.;) In the end though I have always been too cheap for vanity plates and that is probably how it will stay.;)

Can you get characters on the licence plate in your state?

I bought a set for the Red Baron back in 2001. Here in Jersey at the time you had to pick 3 or 4 in order of interest. I got the second one. Got the idea from a bike in a M/C show in Maine.Thought at the time if I ever got the right car, I'd copy it. The '88 red 300CE was it.

yes, various types such as Purdue or Ball State. You pay an extra $45 or so and the beneficiary gets like $5.
