Victorville, CA buried in tumbleweeds
We had these in southern NM where I grew up. Pretty effective strategy for spreading seeds. We called those seeds 'stickers' - barbs sticking out from many angles.
But I never saw them this bad. Howling wind and tumbleweeds wreak havoc in Victorville

I was curious, did an image search of the town, hard to know much from that but it did look like weird geography to make home somehow. This pic is nice. The Mojave River I guess.

I can't believe people actually live in Victorville. That place is great for plane graveyard spotting and... that's all I got.

I had heard of it but didn't know much of anything about it. Wikipedia says 120k population. A Google earth virtual visit is interesting. No irrigated agriculture in the vicinity. Not clear what sort of industries give it a financial base. The list of leading employers is unremarkable. Quite a few sprawling homesteads in various newish develoments. Looks like multi-acre lots.

yeah decent size town, the freight airport is huge there, but you've also got Edwards afb pretty close, borax mines, a Hyundai plant as well so there is stuff around. The biggest thing I thought was weird is that they had drive thru of everything...2-3 lanes in most cases like banks. The inside of the fast food places were almost empty, but the drive thru had lines around the corner.
Also, 2 Dennys in the same town on the same road, now that's just bizarre.

Newer towns in California are depressing. I mean I do gather that there is an old part of Victorville but a lot of it looks like low budget McMansion action from what I can see. Berkeley for example, has a more mid 20th century feel to the layout and architecture. But the newer burgs up north are more like your description of Victorville. A little town I've worked in some, Pinole, is just depressing. The business district is one mini-mall after another. The infamous town of Antioch similar.

Victorville
But it is the home of the first Cracker Barrel Restaurant in California since the 80's ones failed!

I have never gone to Victorville. I have passed through on my way to some place else ... Usually Big Bear. Victorville just never made it on to my "gotta go there" list.

Well, 'El Mirage' is a much better name for a town.

I don't see the problem with those weeds. Last weekend I had fluffy water drifts up the roof line from snowstorm evelyn. Ice snow sleet freezing rain. Had to find one car by feel. Storm started Friday took until Tuesday afternoon before I dug out to the road. -- so yeah, couple of weeds seems like child's play by comparison
