om 616 engine turbo conversion
Hello, I have a 1985 307d motorhome with a om 616 engine in it.I am looking for a way to boost the HP,I have been given to understand it is possible to put a Turbo on it?. Any help that a member can give me would be fantastic. If any member can give me a contact number of a company that can do the conversion work, that would be better still. Thank-you all very much,Kind regards Pete.

Conversion kits for the 240D existed when 240D's were sold in the U.S. If you are very lucky, you might be able to find an unused one on fleabay. I am told Mahindra (in India) currently sells an uprated turbo version of the 616. Neither of these options are endorsed by Daimler AG, and longevity can be expected to be less than a normal 616. Is there any way you could shoehorn a stock OM617.95x into the engine bay?

Are you in Bristol England Pete?
AMG made conversion kits in the 1980s before they got swallowed up by Mercedes but the power these OM616 turbos produced was pretty close to the revised OM617 (post 1980) - most people would probably say you should try and get a OM617a (turbo) as these engines were fitted to the TNs. You'd probably need a shorter propshaft (at a guess) However this chap here on the forum is fitting a turbo to his OM616 MB 616 diesel powered Astro build And this chap has done a different engine swap Installation of om602.961 into TN van

I'm not aware of any 617 turbos installed in TN vans at the factory. There used to be company in England specializing in turboing the 616 in motorhomes. They also sold an auto-clutch. I put a link in here years ago. I believe they have now stopped that business due to the lack of need. You'll have some issues getting the turbo under the doghouse, hence the need for a kind of specialized conversion that is different than the models sold for the 616 in 240d cars. I doubt you will see much improvement in the speed of your motorhome. I've owned a 307d motorhome. My advice is to spend the money on something else and reconcile yourself to enjoying the countryside when you're driving the motorhome. I'd say in a day's motorhome traveling, a turbo might reduce your travel time by 10 minutes or something. Nothing will turn the 616 into a powerhouse.
