Snake in the closet!

About ten I received an email from my downstairs tenant. She reported a small snake in the closet.

I don't like snakes at all. I decided I'd better capture it rather than having it wandering around in my house.

My son is a snake expert and appreciator so I sent him a text hoping he'd come catch it and put it out, assuming it was a garter snake.

I doubted he would answer at that hour so girded myself to go do snake battle with shoes and socks and long pants. I also for good measure put on a very large set of yellow rubber boots I bought 20 years ago for walking in fresh concrete.

I was reluctant to tell my wife as I was not sure if she would get overly excited but as I prepared to go out she asked what was up. I told her that the renter was reporting a snake in her closet downstairs. i asked her if she thought I would do better with a crooked stick or a shovel?

She said she would just catch it with her hands...she did it when she was a kid. Feeling a little foolish now I grabbed the shovel and we headed downstairs.

The renter let her right in and indicated where she had seen it. I was right behind the Mrs. ready to kill it if necessary. The mrs turned around with the snake in her hand....it was about 5" long garter snake!

She tossed it outside and we went back upstairs.

I said she was my hero and wondered out loud if the momma snake was still in there with another 12 baby snakes?

As I pulled off the gronky yellow boots my son texted me back. I told him his mother had captured the snake and saved me.

What a lovely wife I have!

Hmm, I always find speaking sternly to the snake does the trick. Have you tried that?

Funny incident. Anticipation of what was behind the closet door. If there were poisionous snakes in the region. Would get to me.

You cannot ask a female tenant how long was the snake. They have been lied to so much their objective length descriptions can be less than reliable. .

There are supposed to be timber rattlers around but I have never seen one nor anybody I know. I hear of water moccasins in southern Indiana, but again never seen one.

I saw one in Florida near my son's house when he lived there.
