Private car rentals????

Watching TV and saw a add for Turo. It's a site where people rent their personal cars. The prices are great. Saw a 2006 E320 for $38 a day.

Has anyone used any of these services? Seems like a much more economical way to rent a car.

How is liability protection addressed? If you plow into a busload of attorneys, how are you covered?

I'd want my own insurance to work on it. Otherwise, i'd think you might be able to rent some interesting cars for less.

I have friends who use it. Some of then have rented cars they are interested in buying for a few days to see how they like it. Personally, I dont let many people drive my car...certainly not strangers.

Could you rent one to do the One Lap of America race, if they bring it back?

They offer insurance or you use your own. I assume it's the same as if you are driving your friends car. I'll have to verify before I go on my next trip.

I downloaded the Turo app and the entire meteoplex area was listed. Found a sweet '61 vette listed for $300 a day and 100 miles. Found several Teslas, 1 Maserati, a Lambo and a bunch of Porches along with all the daily drivers.

I have used it twice. Drop off/return needs to be scheduled carefully since there is no storefront. No recourse if drop off is delayed; late return charges apply.

Not for a capitalist, I own something that maybe someone else can use, I want X for that use. Both parties agree on the rate and it is a done deal. Kind of like buying sweet corn at a farmers stand. He wants $3.00 for ten ears, I think that is fair and I buy ten, get to pick from the batch out there. Happened today, no government involved easo-peso.

For a Democrat Socialist, it will be a no go. The rich property owners by law need to let anyone have their stuff free.

Kind of like Uber or Lyft. Allows the little guy.to rent her/his vehicle at their convience at rates which are lower than rental companies. People do it with homes (Airbnb, VRBO...) so why not other possessions. Seems inevitable to me.

It also falls into the minimalist mind set. I own a whole bunch of stuff that I use sparingly and would not own if there was an economical way to rent instead of own.

I know my insurance company asked if my 'New' '15 Chevy Volt would be used for Uber or such. I would see the same thing for this. Probably their insurance should cover it, if they have full coverage. Still???? Or would the website cover it? Would they secure a Credit Card to cover any damages? I think most do that with house rentals. I could be wrong.

You could just rent cars from people, review them on youtube and collect the ad revenue...

I like the idea - as a car guy, Id much rather rent a 2005 Miata than a 2017 Altima. Not sure how the money (or corporate travel insurance) works though.
