Bought a Yugo with 9K miles!
 

So my friend and I have been looking for a quirky car to buy and take to auto shows and last week we found the perfect match and it was cheap. It's a 1988 Yugo GVX (the "performance" model), one owner and only 9K miles. We got it for ~$1200 and we're going to do a tune-up, carb rebuild plus new tires and brakes before we put it on the road, but fortunately, parts are dirt cheap. The story behind the car is that the owner's husband wanted to a buy a new Porsche and she told him that she would only let him buy it if she got a new car too, so the Porsche dealer gave her the Yugo to seal the deal. It seems she didn't care too much for it because she then leased a 1990 300D and purchased it after the lease expired, and drove that until she had a stroke earlier this year. My parents bought that car and a 1991 F150 with the I6 and 5-speed.

It runs great if you fill the bowl of the carb but the carb is seized up and doesn't allow the mechanical fuel pump to get fuel into the bowl. The build quality is horrendous in some aspects but in general seems better put together than some American cars from the 80s. Seats are surprisingly comfortable. Once it's picked up, my friend wants to take it to autoshows and I want to use it for dates. Another friend works as a valet for an upscale restaurant so I'm sure I could get him to park it up front for everyone to see.

Prolly not that bad to drive, and quality probably not that bad either. Remember it is an iron curtain copy of a Fiat so don't expect benz build quality.;)

9K DRIVEN but how many miles towed or pushed?:rolleyes:

Use it for dates? Not looking for a return engagement or what? It certainly would weed out any gold diggers I guess. Nothing says, "Look at me. I'm successful, I'm a good pick, I could be the guy you're looking for" like a 30 year old Yugo you have to prime the carburetor to start!:P:ladysman:

The carby prolly just needs careful cleaning, I'd drain whatever old varnishy fuel is in the gas tank too before doing much else .

I'd love to have this to play with but $1,200 ?! wow .

Does it have a rear window defroster/hand warmer?

If you ever want to buy it, I have the original OEM tool kit with Yugo stamped all over it.

Keep it parked outside, away from buildings, and anything else you don't want to see well done. If ever a car was aching to catch fire...

Change the timing belt right away before you run it anymore, unless you want to replace all the valves. It's cheap, but they have an extremely short interval (like 30k miles I think) and the one that's on it is probably the (way too old) original one.

Make sure you have good tools. A Yugo is a project car for as long as you own it.

Will also say that a 50% chance of breaking down on your date no matter what you do, does tend to interfere with the possibility of getting lucky.

Campy old econobox vehicles are much more charming when they run. May i suggest a rabbit instead.

Actually i take that back. I once had a very entertaining time with a lady i initially picked up in a horrible old convertible lebaron with no back window and 3 fender colors... In january.

Although i didnt want to go and wasnt interested at first going on a blind date to oblige a friend, so of course the girl was all about that as women dig a-holes for some reason. It was over when she realized i wasnt really that big an a-hole.

Therefore my advice is this-

When you pick up the lucky girl and the car breaks down or you lose a wheel (just as likely), act like its her fault and treat her like crap. Much more effective than an apology.

Thats a cool toy to tinker with. I wouldnt daily it but I would drive it. With a solid AAA plan.
