Because we live in a society which thinks drunks are fine and airlines are too scared to lose customers if they ban alcohol to those that don't.

If the ban was a federal law it would be fine. People said the same thing about smoking on airlines and they survived. If someone want to get from A to B they are going to fly. I'm going to San Diego in December. I can drive for 19 hours not including fuel and food stops or I can hope on a plane and be there in 5 or 6 if you include driving to the airport and waiting to board. The choice is a no brainer. A ban on alcohol would not change that decision for 99.9% of fliers. I doubt the revenue stream is that high. The airlines could tack on a few extra bucks to the air fare and no one would be the wiser.

I think the reason it's still served is because passengers want it, the fed won't ban it and it's not a big deal on the flights.

People who want laws to restrict the behavior of the many to counteract the poor behavior of the few.... makes me sick.

I've spent most of my life in and around the world of lake boating. I don't know everything (who does?), however I do know the basics, i.e. all passengers should be wearing life vests AT ALL TIMES, have an extra outboard motor in case of main engine failure, have a set of oars in case ALL the engines fail and you need to paddle your a** back to shore, extra gasoline, tools for emergency engine and stern drive repairs, etc etc.

Now, think about this. What percentage of passengers aboard a commercial cruise ship know how to swim? How many know how to properly man and operate a life raft? How many have emergency locating beacons so the Coast Guard could find and locate their sorry a** should they happen to figure out how to inflate and safely operate a life raft?

I submit the percentages are so low as even be worth discussing. And yet many cruise ships leave port with over 5,000 non-mariner trained land lubbers. Thank you but no thank you.

Moving the discussion to airliners. Just before takeoff, a flight attendant gives us the five minute safety-drill. Notice how many of your fellow passengers are sleeping, reading magazines, jerking themselves, whatever. They are obviously not listening to LIFE-SAVING information that just might save their sorry a** should an emergency arise.

In a real aircraft emergency, EVERYONE, captain, co-pilot, flight attendants AND passengerse need to be 100% cognizant and aware of their surroundings. They need to know the difference between a seat belt and an emergency exit door. They need to know which emergency exit door to exit in case of emergency. If sitting by the emergency exit door, they need to be strong enough to operate it.

If ANY passenger is falling down drunk during the flight they could easily become a real world contributor to death and mayhem to their fellow passengers. Being drunk aboard a commercial aircraft is about as self-serving as it gets.

Last flight I was on the passenger across the aisle from me was drunk at the START of the flight and yet DURING the flight the flight attendants kept serving him one alcoholic drink after another. With each alcoholic beverage, he became louder and more obnoxious. On the positive side, he seemed to think everyone enjoyed his crude obscene loud mouth jokes.

I think if someone had given the word, all the sober passengers would have given the guy a blanket party!!

Who cares about flight safety as long as the airlines make a few $$$$$$ from the sale of alcohol?

I'm old so I remember real food and polite passengers and stewardess' in air travel, now it's like "Cattle Car Airlines" unless you pop the $ for first class .

I hope I never have to travel by air again, it's not worth it .

Yes, I used to take those short hop business flights that were about one hour, they were O.K but needing a shoe horn to get into our out of your seat, the bratty kids no one tells to SHADDAP, the noisy & bothersome drunks and the fat women who refuse to buy two seats and make everyone near them miserable....

First class or I'll drive / ride the 'Hound, anything but fly .

I fly several times a year. It is what it is. Air travel is the cheapest it has ever been in ages. I'm 6'3", leg room is not great but I get an aisle seat and it works. I buy a sandwich ahead of time or bring something from home. Driving a few hundred miles makes sense. More than that, it makes sense to fly. Passenger loads are high. A few people who would rather take a bus is not going to affect anything.

If you want to take a bus maintained by who knows who or drive in a car where over 30k a year die on the roads. Knock your self out.

I used to fly 36 weeks a year, now maybe twice a year.
Always on Air France or Lufthansa to Europe. The seats cost about $12 more but they are wider than the US seats you pay 35 extra for, when traveling overseas.


To me, the biggest headache is the airport. I'm thinking about shipping my clothes in advance so I need nothing when I got, then shipping them back via FedEx the day before I leave. It costs about 50 bucks each way, but definitely no hassle! I just carry a briefcase with phones, laptop and extra camera.

For some, it takes the edge off flying. Some use sleeping pills timed for the flight cycle....knew a woman deathly afraid to fly, popped some pill so she didn't have to worry, conked out, maintenance delay, woke up,freak out at 35,000. Doesn't bother her anymore.

One thing for sure, the military doesn't allow drunks or pill popping soldiers, marines, sailors, infantrymen or airmen aboard a military aircraft. Should an inflight emergency arise, ALL SOBER HANDS ON DECK.

I'll second that. Now that you have mentioned it, think about this. Once the majority of people receive their driver's license at or around age 16, they never take driver's education training again for the rest of their lives.

Is it any wonder that after 40 - 50 years of driving with no annual physical required and no driver's safety education required, one tends to forget how to properly park, signal, brake, turn, pass, stop, etc etc.????

Around 40,000 people are killed on the nation's highways by LICENSED INSURED UNTRAINED PHYSICALLY SUSPECT DRIVERS every year.

Go figure.......

On a daily basis, I wonder what the proportion of drunk, head-butting passengers is to sober, non head-butting passengers?
