Patrol cars round up drivers who pass stopped school bus

https://www.wsfa.com/2018/11/16/watch-patrol-cars-round-up-drivers-who-pass-stopped-school-bus/

Note to self... always stop for a school bus.

Quote:
Monica Douglas knew it was time to act after she watched traffic blow by a school bus along busy U.S. Highway 19 in Port Richey, FL.

The bus driver would stop with its lights flashing and stop-arm extended, but vehicles kept passing the bus day after day, even as it was dropping off students, WTVT reported.
There were a bunch of police waiting and they nailed 30 people who blew by the bus.

Video is in the link.

It's 2018, why don't school buses have dash cams?

There was a lady here who did that and killed three siblings. She is in jail now or at least being charged with all that is appropriate.

The parents lost all their small children.

Pa: If convicted of breaking this law, you could get a $250 fine, five points on your driving record, and a 60-day suspension of your license.

I stop.

Yeah that was horrible, the week before the time change, could have been different if it was lighter outside. The school district is now of course after the fact picking up students in the mobile home park not on the side of the hwy where the accident took place.

Good that the police did this. Stop for school busses, it is simple as that. Lots of school busses have flashing swing-out stop signs in addition to the other flashing red lights. Nobody can say they don’t know.

NYC had no requirement to stop for school busses until just a few years ago. Dealing with traffic was a lesson we learned very young. The occasional squished kid was our first lesson in Darwinism.

I like this idea, what I don't like is traps to catch people who don't slam on the brakes when someone puts one foot in a crosswalk when the car is maybe 10-20 yards from the crosswalk.

They do stings like that around here now and then. I see it a lot, people walk up to the crosswalk and step out without much observation of what is happening. 'It's my right suckers, stop your damn car and let me pass!' Or something like that. I prefer checking things out and waiting for 10 seconds so I can cross with no anxiety about some distracted fool killing me.

I recall a few months ago some guy did not even pause as he walked up to and into the crosswalk. I and 3 other cars who were pretty close to it came to a stop - I looked in the mirror and saw that there were no cars behind us within a few blocks. IOW, wait 5 seconds and the fool could have crossed in a more leisurely, secure fashion and a few motorists would have retained a small amount of their investment in brakes and fuel.

A few years back a woman took her life into her hands by walking in front of me, had to hit the brakes pretty hard. I shouted at her "didn't your mama teach you to look both ways before you cross the street?!" You can read about people getting killed in such crosswalks. Oops.

Post Pedestrian Safety Tickets

This is a serious problem every where .

I'm glad to see the cops took the time, sad that no one really seems to care until they actually know someone who's been hit .

I'm sure you can find links to Glendale, California where the problem is *so* bad, the cops use officers dressed in bunny and santa claus suits and still they almost get killed time after time, the reason there is socioeconomic and no, they're not those scary, pesky black folks .

I only wish the city where I live that is so often ticket happy (means I drive legally and carefully) flat refuses to use the 23 new BMW police Motocycles they bought "for improved safety" to set up and nail the asshats who every day by the dozens, run the stop light near the freeway on ramp, two blocks from a high school .

Talk about low hanging fruit but they won't do it no matter how much the citizens complain .

The first part of the video the bus is stopped but no red lights flashing; the angle prohibits the sight of the arm extended.
Passing a school bus with only yellow lights on is legal in FL. If the road is undivided then all lanes of traffic must stop- if there is a median then only the traffic on the same side is required and expected to stop.
I drop my sons at a bus stop nearly every school day. people ignoring the bus flashing lights is rare on my stop, but it does happen in other places.

I support this.

If people will not be responsible, the driver is making sure that the kids are protected.

Who is SSOOOOOOOO important that they can't wait this long for the school bus?

Happened to me in about 1966, One cop was waving people over in front of the bus, walked over and took my/our drivers licsenses, about ½ dozen. Next guy slowed down & then gunned it outta there. Cop threw our licsences down on the ground, "People, this is your lucky day, NEVER let me catch you doing this again!" and away he went. I have never pulled that stunt, ever, again.

A sting: A bus pulled over. On came the lights and the swing out STOP sign.

So people coming the other way stopped even though this was a busy street and no kids were getting on and off.

The bus driver waved at the other drivers to come on by. So they did and a cop was parked on a motorcycle right behind the bus.

And the drivers that obeyed the bus drivers command to pass by were ticketed.

It was just a lesson to never pass a school bus with the lights flashing.

This worked a few times until they ticketed a lawyer. Then the city would up paying back everyone they had snagged in this manner.

But the bottom line? Go by the book, not by the instructions of some guy sitting in the divers seat of a bus who is making it up to suit themselves.

This was long ago and I can't remember the city except it was in the D/FW area.

Five hundred dollar fine ten or more years ago in Nova Scotia, Canada. Plus some points no doubt. It could so easily result in the death of a child. The fine would be the lesser of the problems if you hit and killed a child in that scenario.

Vehicle manslaughter or worse would result. Locally besides the irresponsibility. Personally I consider it a very serious social failure. It is simply indoctrinated here you do not pass a school bus with lights ablaze. Nor should you even think of doing so.

My personal opinion is they should have taken his driving license as well. I would not mind losing mine if I ever did something that stupid and thoughtless.

I think what bothered me the most is I knew a guy that was caught. That is how I knew the fine amount he got. What bothered me is he did not seem to realize how serious an issue that offence could potentially result in. I know I would not want the death of a child on my conscience. It is not like they really obstruct traffic. They pull over if a line is starting behind them to let the cars by.
