WTB: C226 engine
 
This seems to be the closest forum section for what I want.


I am looking to buy a 1951 Kaiser Frazer Manhattan four-door that was the victim of a restorer's bankruptcy.



Imagine that the guy buys the car, gives it to the restorer for restoration, he disassembles the car and goes bankrupt.


The car is now missing the engine and trans but everything else is there except possibly some side glass.


There are apparently several engines used in or compatible with this car:


1. The original Continental C226 inline six with/without supercharger


2. A Willys Jeep 250 cu in inline six


3. An unnamed four cylinder


The Kaiser forum is a waste of time. I think all the members are dead. They don't even answer when I want to subscribe for money to their forum.


I am hoping to find some Jeep collectors who might know something.


However, the Continental engine used in this car was used in some military vehicles. I'm looking to find out which ones, in case this engine also has a compatible military gearbox.


Any information available appreciated.


Otherwise I might need to find a 617.952 with gear box to put in this!

I just happened to stumble on your post. It's probably 5 years since I last posted here...

I had a 1953 Manhattan about 30 years ago, sold it because of storage and low oil pressure issues.

Does your Kaiser have a Hydramatic transmission? If so, there are a few GM v8 engines that would bolt up to the bell housing.

Kaiser wanted to have a V8 with automatic in those years but they could not afford both..so they settled for the forklift motor and the Hydramatic.

Performance of the 226 is nothing to write home about, but a 389 poncho would turn your Kaiser into a bit of a Q-ship.

And I agree about your take on the KF club forums. It was much the same 30 years ago before the internet when they published monthly newsletters. Friendly people they were, but they seemed to be of a pretty aged demographic with not much new blood.

Sure wish I still had that car though....
