Some amazing Grand Prix footage. Those drivers had balls.

Wow! I though the film 'Grand Prix' was awesome. I only watched it for the first time last year. It is still awesome. This film is stunning. The quality, the angles, etc. I did watch to out takes and such for "Grand Prix'. Some critics thought it was a bit to bloody. A few years later, the statistics were only 1 in 5 drivers survive that era if they drove for 5 years.

Grand prix is very, very good. I have a DVD and watch it regularly to inspire me to go autocross. LeMans too.

Does anyone knows what car the camera car is in the beginning, the silver color suggests it’s a Mercedes, but I don’t think it is?

That is some amazing footage. Hard to imagine now closing down a city for a day for a race. I guess being not merely a city but a principality has something to do with that. And the people lining the track, wow, and this was 7 years after the Le Mans disaster.
I didn't realize the survival rate was that poor. Then again you look at those cars, not much by way of saftey features. But grand prix was more raw in that day, more cool IMO. I liked the late 60s era, Jack Brabham and gang.

I thought Mercedes, the hood shape brings that to mind.

Windshield frame far too delicate for Mercedes’s tastes. I vote Italian, likely Ferrari...
EDIT: looked at it again - I vote 190SL... |

Most of the Italians of that era (Ferrari, Maserati) had a hood scoop, not a tapered hood bubble, which this car and the 190SL has. Also the 190SL had a thin stainless steel rod running from the center of the windshield frame to the dashboard, as does this car. I ruled out Lamborghini, as their 1962 convertibles were more suited for plowing fields than running the streets of Monaco...

And silver is the color that represents Germany.

'By this point of the season, Lorenzo Bandini was dead from a horrific accident in the last laps of the Monaco GP, and Mike Parkes was badly injured in a career-ending 1st lap crash at Spa. Another driver was killed while testing at Silverstone.
As much as we like to romanticise this period of Formula 1, it was still very much a lethally dangerous sport. ' This was one of the comments on the Nordschliife |

Here are some 190 sl visors for sale. I'm not sure they match the film.

OTOH, I gather now the G forces can get so great, drivers are in danger of blacking out.
