Health costs for Americans visiting Canada.

Well I took the wife into the emergency department in the afternoon. As I hung around I asked for a copy of the fee schedule for visiting Americans at our hospital. I got a six page document.

Some words of potential benefit. If you just need to see a doctor with an issue that a hospital is not needed here. Try hard in the phone book to locate one that will see you at his office. Or a self standing clinic. Otherwise you will be hit by a 895.00 fee for just parking your posterior on the chair in the emergency department. Everything beyond that is extra.

This rate applies to the three hospitals in our county. It conceivably could be higher or lower in other areas of Canada. To pay the bill is expected. You will have to attempt any recovery from your provider back home if any. Our hospital will not. Although if you did not have the funds I think they could not hold you hostage. Nor would they refuse to at least try to do what they could to get you back home. It would be a really large issue if anyone was denied. It is so alien to our system even the thought of it is bad.

As for the wife. We suspected she had lost circulation in one leg. She had done nothing to cause the pain she was experiencing with it. We had just got five new doctors in our local town. Sure enough one was working the emergency department.

He could find no pulse in her left foot with the amplifiying device they use. Very pronounced in the other. I was In the examining room with them. He told me this is going to be a while so you may want to go home. We will call you as soon as we know. A couple of hours later they called and said she is good to go. Now what would this have cost a visiting American? You cannot play around with a no circulation problem. It is a valid emergency.

There would have been the initial 895.00 fee. The xray and cat scan for another 2,600.00. Probably at least 500.00 for the blood work. Consultant fee with the cardiologist. Who knows what that would have been. Examination of the cat scan by a radiologist as well again another fee. Then the bill from the attending physician.

Her leg has been recovering very fast since. I have no ideal of where he was from as a doctor. He spoke average north American English. He did not just dump her onto a vascular specialist.

Our cost of services for American visitors quotes. You will receive very high quality service for your dollars. As I examined the fee schedules for visitors. It was obvious that if we had been an American couple visiting. It might have been around six thousand dollars. Had he passed her on to a specialist. Staying in the hospital that night would have been another 3700.00. Plus of course the fee for the specialist and possibly some form of vascular surgery. Or he would perhaps have just done what that doctor did. I tend to believe this policy has come to pass because of some abuse by non residents. .

We are two hundred miles in from the border. They used to throw away the paperwork of visitors needing medical service. Doctors are still a private business. If you see one in an office or clinic. On a minor issue you will just get a small bill of perhaps 50.00 or told to forget any charge. The doctor may be mandated to charge you a punitive fee by our systems standards if any procedure is done at the hospital.

Our doctors do not have specific billing people. Or people to argue with providers. They just enter the patient numbers and proceedures used in their computer or their receptionist does. They have total control over the proceedures used. They as a group negotiate the rates for given proceedures they are to receive every year with the MSI system.

Even ground and air ambulance charges are totally covered under the plan. For a non resident 600.00 plus for a short ground trip. I have no ideal about the air ambulance charge. Neither are specified other than they are stated as the visitors responsibility. The 600.00 was the charge for us before that was also absorbed into the system. For ground transport. Up to a limit of perhaps twenty miles as a guess.

A universal plan like ours is not sociolisim. That is absolute propaganda. If you do not have a drug plan. Prescription drugs cost about a third of the American systems prescription drug cartel. A visitor here would get that benefit. As long as the prescription is issued by a Canadian doctor. The American prescription drug cartel eventually got prescriptions issued by American doctors made illegal to get filled here.

We have had this system for more than fifty years now. I have never heard a complaint about the cost by our resident users. Sick or well you just do not feel it financially. One state or the other makes no financial difference basically. You are also paid up to about 500.00 a week for up to six weeks if you are working. The negative component for elective surgery remains yet delays vary by region. Nothing is utopia.

Glad to hear she is OK. This part "prescriptions issued by American doctors made illegal to get filled here. " At first glance one would think the local gov would be making that sort of call.

First, thanks for her well wish. She is really pretty much back to normal. .I should have perhaps gotten some flowers for her. The resultant inevitable interigration of why? Discouraged any attempt.

The anti prescription filling mandate was federal. So it is indeed across the country.
